87 sputtering acceleration
bought a 87 truck with 305 that has been sitting for several years, so far i have put a new fuel pump and tank, and a tune up. it will sit there and idle good but when you start to take off and pushing gas 1/8to1/4 it has a sputter and sometimes will die, but when you push gas further it will smooth out and take gas good.

Re: 87 sputtering acceleration
If it is fuel injected.....i would check the fuel lines if rubber to see if they are mushy the insides will choke off fuel at times after sitting for a long time.....also did you change out the fuel sock they can get weak and choke off the suction.........

Re: 87 sputtering acceleration
How about the fuel filter being bunged up? I'd think an 87 would be TBI. If so, check to see if any codes are set on the computer. Could possibly be the throttle position sensor that's bad (akin to a defective accelerate pump on a carb).

Re: 87 sputtering acceleration
My 87 also sat for a couple of years and does the same thing as yours. I have done the same things you have to yours and it still sputters upon acceleration. Mine got a little better after I blocked off the vacuum line going to the cruise control. I also got a "check engine" light come on and a 33 code showed up. It's for the IAC but every test I performed shows it's good. Might still replace mine just to see if that fixes it.

Re: 87 sputtering acceleration
1)Throttle body base Gasket
2)EGR (you can test this by removing the vacuum line and plugging it. If the sputtering stops, there was your issue. may cause your light to come on. 3)Idle Air Control Valve- as someone above posted, I tested my original one and it checked out, but on a whim replaced it anyways and it made a huge difference.

Re: 87 sputtering acceleration
Just an update for you. I got a used IAC and installed it on my truck. Although I have only taken it out once, the truck seems to be driving a lot better and not cutting out like it used to. I will need to take it out for a good long drive to see if it really fixed the problem or not. Will keep you posted.

Re: 87 sputtering acceleration
i replaced the tps because mine checked to be bad, and it was throwing a 13 oxygen sensor code and that also said check the tps sensor, but it didnt change the way it ran one bit that i could tell.
