Exactly. The thin piece encasing the 'ring' was for the simulator. The ring allows compression against the steel wheel using the acorn style lug nuts. The ring is the factory item.

Like mentioned, a contrasting color that compliments the wheels works or even the same color depending on what 'look' you're trying to achieve. I just stripped mine down & they'll get rattle can black since IMO it's not worth powder coating (since it's the 1st thing that the lugnuts contact & will come right back off when tightening).
