Disassembly of cab... HELP! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys, finally been able to get some stuff done on the truck. She is a 1951 3100. I am trying to separate the inner panels so I can get all the rust cleaned up behind the panel, but I have run into some problems getting the rear panel out. I can't figure out what I'm missing. I have cut all the spot welds and have removed those bolts under the lip. I can feel the thing moving around but it isn't budging. I have a factory assembly manual and I can see where the parts are supposed to separate, but the manual gives me just a small image that is less than helpful. I was hoping for some advice from some of you guys with experience with getting this piece out.

The panel around the window? What about spot welds at the belt line? The verticle ribs spot weld on the belt line and may be securing the rear panel.

Looking at the diagrams and thinking of how the belt line is connected to that outer panel, I get the impression that the belt line is welded to the inner shell but is separate from the outer shell. I can separate where the window stripping goes and I can shove a screw driver down inside and see the belt line moving freely. The bands have been removed.

I don't know, please do educate me. If you are veteran with this work, I'll follow you blindly. So I need to separate the belt line from the panel?

Well, thank you. It's out. I have learned something here... I have no respect for the man who build the truck in factory... There is ZERO rhyme or reason for where these welds were placed. The diagram showed two welds per rib... TWO! Not freaking fifteen! Sorry, I'm done.

Slow day on the assembly line, or change made during production that was not documented. QC may have noticed problems and the quy said "they want more welds, well here you go..."

Or sometimes the guy who is behind the welder decides to go rogue and add some to their liking !

So how things go'in Gearhead? The rear outer panel was the same on mine. Frick'in million spot welds.
