VSS Options
So working on gathering parts and pieces for my 5.3L swap. One issue I haven't quite tackled yet is the VSS. Right now I am going to reuse the factory SM465, this is a 2WD truck. I would like to stick with a 40 PPR VSS as I plan to swap to an NV4500 later on at some point, prehaps when my bank account recovers . What would be my best choice? Jags that run has the diff mounted tone ring, which seems like the best deal price wise. Next, Dakota Digital has a little bullet shaped unit which bolts right onto the cable drive from the transmission, but pricy for what it is and I couldn't run my mechanical speedo which I was planning to do until I go the truck re-geared.
Any other tricks you guys have? |

Re: VSS Options
I figured. I've done a lot of research on the subject. Basically I want to keep it 40 PPR so when I get the NV4500, I don't have to spend another $75 to have the PCM re-programmed. Any mechanical drive pass through solutions are out since I'll lose the mechanical drive at that point.

Re: VSS Options
I'm not familiar with the sm465, but on the th400 i had in my 87 I drove the VSS off the speedo cable. It just installed inline of the speedo cable and transmission and the speedometer in the truck still worked, I believe I used the Dakota Digital one. I know HP Tuners and EFI live are expensive up front, but if you are going to be doing swaps it may be worth investing in one of them so you can update whatever you need on your own.
