Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

Good job on the build!....just spent last 1hr reading through the thread!....sounds like you got it sorted now though!.....question for you though....How'd you find the fit end of the LS with that sump?......does it end up hanging as low as everyone says it does?....or OK with height where you've got it at?...I'm in Australia and looking at doing this swap into my '80 c10...looking at getting same style sump....

honestly I wish I had the money for the holley oil pan. The truck pan does hang pretty low. With the drop I've got the sump is only a few inches off the ground and I've scuffed the sump a couple times already while pulling into steep drives.More times than Im comfortable with actually. At stock height or with just a two inch drop in the front, Or if I was running a larger wheel tire combo, it wouldn't be a big deal. Ive got most of the bugs worked out now ans driving it quit a bit. I plan on posting more when I really start the bodywork but I just dont have the money right now.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

new flush mount rear fuel filler for the blazer tank. This was the "surprise" filler location I was talking about when I decided to do the rear mount tank.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

I also decided to add a little liquid horsepower that I had sitting around the garage for the last 10 years.

Made this bracket to hold the control unit...

It bolts to the fuel rail bolt...

Completely hidden

Made this custom control panel so everythings hidden on the inside as well

And since I dont have a bed cover yet, I decided to make a nice water protective box for the bottle that just looks like some redneck storage..lmao

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

So as luck would have it, my uncle does alot of buying selling and trading and today he ended up with a 1997 sportside that had a very nice roll n lock retractable bed cover on it! since hes planning to sell it, he let me have the bedcover in exchange for tuning his 2006 1500 he just bought! $100 worth of HP tuner credits and a couple hours of my time in exchange for a $1300 becover....yea Ill take it!!! After taking measurements I decided I should be able to make this thing work without too much effort. The only thing I dont like is that it weighs about 60 lbs and I was trying to reduce weight, not add it but whatever. At least I can get rid of the ribber made box i currently have my nitrous bottle mounted in and the bed cover should reduce wind drag so that might make up for the weight at the dragstrip.....I hope. Here it is in pieces. Ill add pictures of the install once its finished. I may have to weld some tabs onto the bed because my bed is a tad wider than the 97 sportside bed but we'll see!

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

This is what it looks like installed. You can see SteppinWolf in the background.Btw, the green trucks for sale for $4000obo. Has a rebuilt carbed 350 in it. Runs smooth as silk and for a 97 is actually a really nice truck inside and out.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

Also got my new leaf springs and the flip kit and shocks I got from Rodney(RodsGreen10) installed.

Heres a shot of my old rednecked up leaf and ****tyfab drop shackle compared to the unmolested spring and shackle

Freshly painted flip kit parts

And heres the issue I had with the shock bolt hitting the flip kit plate

Ended up buying shorter bolts and putting them in backward

Everything bolted up

new issue, drivers side is sitting on the bumpstop but passenger side is actually riding about 3/4 inch higher. Still havent figured this one out yet.

I was actually planning to cut off the factory bumpstops and possibley notch the frame but I need to figure out why its sitting unlevel first. Then once I get it level I need to clearance my rear fenders for the 325/50-15 drag radials because it that bump stop wasnt there, the drivers side would be rubbing big time!

passenger side gap

drivers side gap..or lack of gap

Lol, nope, I actually had that kit on a honda about 10 or 11 years ago. I just bought the jet kit for the lsx kit since everything else is the same. I also bought a window switch and wired up a relay to the TPS wire so it has to be at wide open throttle and at 3000 rpm to activate. Safety first. All the switches are in the ashtray and the window switch is in the glove box. I dont have any pics of it but its the digital intellitronix window switch. Nitrous comes on at 3000, off at 6100 right before the shift. If I get the trans beefed up later on Ill let it flow through the shift but its a stock 4L80 so Im trying to take it easy on it right now.

That's exactly how I set mine up when I had one on a Mustang 10 years ago, can't believe it's been that long. That controller is a nice product but the purple paint scheme they use, not so much. That truck is going to scream.

yea I painted it black but since I hid everything under the engine covers anyway, I think I just wasted paint, lol.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

For a shorter oil pan I have used the Camaro pans got them on Ebay 2010-2015 they are 5" deep and work great for lowered vehicles If you shop around you can find them fairly cheap, this will be the 3rd one I have used.
Make sure you get it with the pickup, dipstick and tube!
Just my 2cents.

Will it fit behind my front crossmember without modification? If so I may go that route when I go to put a stall converter in since Ill have to take the engine loose anyway. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

Yes it should fit right in with no issues,I used one on (Blake's GMC) build and his C-10 sets pretty low (it has the updated crossmember like yours) and it fit like a glove. I think I picked it up for like $150.00 and just bought one for my engine that I picked up for "project Orangepeel" and The 1st one was on (john's LS 49 dodge build) All of them in the same price range.
Most of these are take off's from the stock Camaro engine and have never been on the road.

Question overload, lol. Theres some videos posted in this thread of it running but without the nitrous. Ill get new vids soon but Im gonna need more fuel pump before I use the nitrous. Rodney offered me a walbro450 in exchange for some labor but Ive been fighting sickness for a few weeks now(been through 3 rounds of antibiotics) but if he hasnt already done it himself, hopefully I can hook that up soon. I love the cam but I really need a stall with the stage 3. Ive done everything I can tuning and poured tons of timing in down low but theres no getting around it...I need a stall converter. It makes way more power up top now, but takeoff sucks and with these huge sticky drag radials I cant even do a proper burnout since installing the cam. Now if I throw street tires on it thats a different story, lol. I like the true track rear but it feels wierd when Im pulling out slow and turning at the same time.....almost like a dragging feeling....like I can feel it trying to decide which side to send power to. I cant really describe it. But traction is great with it and with street tires itll light em up and leave a nice matched pair of black marks..

Thank you again! Ill definately go to that oil pan next time the engines out. Id do it now but I dont think theres any way of swapping pans with it in the vehicle.

Ok so I just found a page comparing all the ls pans. The ls3 pan is only 1/2" shorter than my truck pan. The hummer pan that gm sells as the muscle car pan is 3/4" shorter so neither of those is really going to give me much more clearance but the ctsv pan is almost 3" shorter!! Im wondering if that ctsv pan would fit.

Just saw this...The CTS-V pan fits well in a square that is the only one I use on my swaps. Fits better IMO then the F-Body pan.
