rebuild questions

I am getting a 350 built for my new Jimmy and am wondering what I want to make sure to have done. What parts should I use, re-use etc.. I dont really know a lot about the rebuild process and don't want to get screwed. I am looking at around 320-350 hp and similar torque curve. Any words of wisdom from the guru's here would help. Thanks

Oh it is a non emision motor if that helps, and I am using an edelbrock carb 600 cfm, and performer intake.

You can reuse most accesories like alternator, p/s pump etc. Best time to replace water pump, belts, hoses, motor mounts, etc. You can stick with the same HEI just rebuild it or you can get a new one. Aon teh carb you might look at getting a Performer or Performer RPM. The RPM has a higher RPM range (1500-6500) compared to the Performer (idle-5500).

If you want to upgrade or change your exhaust this would be a graet time as we.. Also you can reuse your sheet metal (oil pan, valve covers, timing chain cover) but if you want to change them best to do the oil pan and timing cover while the new engine is out and install them before installing the motor.

BTW: What cam are you going to use? I would look at the Comp extreme 4x4 cams. They are good for more power at lower RPM like your Blazer may need and want you are looking for.

RPM manifold doesnt loose that much power lower in the rpm band to really worry about. Just depends on what you want to do with it.

If you're having the motor rebuilt, make sure they do the standard stuff like making sure they check the heads and the block for any cracks. Check the cylinders for wear (hone-bore) Probably be a good idea to have valves, valve seats, springs...all that good stuff replaced. Get a new oil pump, bearings, lifters, cam, timing chain and gears, freeze plugs, and other things I'm leaving out.

But the most important thing is to get rid of that carb and go fuel injected...............I know someone who could take care of you! HeHe

bore/hone with a torque plate, re-size rods with ARP bolts [use stock 5.7" rods] Have the crank ground. A comp XE262 cam, RPM intake [ditch the performer unless you must use it] 600cfm carb or 750cfm Qjet, 9.5:1 compression [9:1 if you want a reliable 87 octane motor] Standerd HEI with some MSD help, 1 5/8" headers into 2.5" collectors. If you re-use the heads, have a valve job done and any other required work. The machinest can tell you all the work that really needs to be done. Decking isen't always needed buy he'll tell you. Same thing goes for the line-hone and valve guides as these somtimes need to be done.
