Which way does this trans cross member go?
I am preparing to reinstall my engine and transmission in a 77 K10 with 350 small block and turbo 350 transmission. I took a bunch of picture as I was taking it apart so I would know how it goes back together but as usual I didn't take enough. I have attempted to attach a photo of the cross member. We will see if it works. But one side of the cross member has an oblonged hole and the other side has a dent in the cross member I assume to make clearance for something. Can anyone tell me which way this is to be installed? Does the oblonged hole go on the DS or the PS?
Thanks for the help. |

Re: Which way does this trans cross member go?
In your photo see the bevel indent on the right side. It is there for the front drive shaft. So it goes on with the indent under the front driveline.

Re: Which way does this trans cross member go?
Titomars, thanks for the reply. I have been working on other things I just got back to this. I think I understand what you are saying. So the bevel on the right goes on the right side of the truck. What I don't understand is the bevel is on the rear side of the cross member. I would think it should be on the front side since the front axle is lower so the driveshaft goes down from the transfer case to the front diff. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Re: Which way does this trans cross member go?
I am sure it still goes that same way. The crossmember is actually in front of the T/C. also the batch of bolt holes on the one side would be for the little factory skid plate.

Re: Which way does this trans cross member go?
Thanks. I will install it that way. Installing it the other way makes less sense. I don't know if you can see it in the photo but I circled in red where that bevel is there are scrape marks where I think the front driveshaft hitting the cross member. Seems to me the bevel should be on that side but there is no way to orient the cross member to have the bevel there. Just seems like I have the wrong cross member or something.

Re: Which way does this trans cross member go?
Does anybody know the correct size of the bolts that attach the transmission cross member to the frame? Mine is a 1978 Chevy C10 Fleetside truck Custom Deluxe. Thank you, Al

3/8" X 16 X 1 1/4" and I believe there are 7 per side, 4 attach to the actual frame rail and 3 for the cross member to brace attachment.
