does a posi replace the carrier in the rear end or does it just attach to it.

Yes, a posi replaces the carrier. You're ring gear bolts to the posi unit just like it did to the carrier. All the other parts contained in the carrier are removed as well.

so is there a 3 and 4 series posi? or just one posi and 3 and 4 series rings will both attach?

There are 3 and 4 series carriers regardless of type.

ok, last question. if i buy a 4 series posi and 4 series R&P that is all i need to change my 12 bolt to 4 series if it was originaly 3 series open 3.07, correct? like there aren't any other parts that are different that i must change?

Yes, when your order the gears and the differential (carrier) that will be all you need. They will(should) match your gears with the carrier. The differential (carrier) is different due to the size of the pinion getting smaller/larger base on the gear change. A 4.10:1 ratio has a MUCH smaller pinion gear diameter than a 3.07:1 ratio, so the carrier flange that the ring gear bolts to is posistioned closer to the centerline of the pinion to make up this difference.
