Well I ended up pointing mine rearward also. Only way they really follow the contour of the tank. No idea what purpose it serves after it sticks out from the bracket but looks like they came from the factory that way.

Thanks for the link I might have gotten some of these for the straps had I known but I just cleaned up and reused the originals.
