Plastic gas filler neck?

My 66 truck has a black plastic filler neck rather than a metal one. I am betting this is unusual and probably an aftermarket part, although I have yet to see this option. Does anybody else have a plastic filler neck or know anything about this? This part appears to be old and seems to function just fine. Is it possible that this is designed to cut down on the possibility of a static charge jumping to the neck during a fillup?

I'm also curious to know if that is aftermarket. My 65 has a plastic neck too.

Re: Plastic gas filler neck?

I just removed the tank from my 65. I also had a plastic filler neck. I am sure it was original I was able to talk to the original owner (my dad) he had never pulled the tank.

My 66 has one. I do not know why unless they figured it was safer to fuel up with a plastic neck. no static electricity. I do not know but I am trying to think like an engineer.

Re: Plastic gas filler neck?

It sounds like these plastic filler necks were factory. That makes me feel better about this. And maybe they are even safer.

Re: Plastic gas filler neck?

My truck was made in the St Louis plant. I haven't taken its plastic filler neck off and inspected it for any GM numbers. I assume this plastic neck came from the factory because it seems old and the grommet seemed ancient and the truck did not seem to be damaged in any way on that side. It is a mystery because it seems that most of these trucks have a metal filler neck.

all my 64-66's (8 different trucks, and the 3 that I parted out as) have the plastic neck, the 60-63's (10 different ones) have steel.

I would say that this information is strong evidence that pastic necks were used in building 64-66 trucks, at least in some GM factories.

Re: Plastic gas filler neck?

1963 was the last year for the metal filler neck. that's why the accessory Bowtie Locking gas cap does not fit 64-66 because the ear size is different , although you can install the metal neck in later year trucks , your plastic one is factory 64-66.
