Metal-framed side windows... what years?

Recently I saw a '66 3/4 ton truck with side windows that have the black metal frames along their top edges. I was thinking they stopped using that style of side glass when they abandoned the knee-knocker cab in 64. Does anyone know what the story is on these? Were they a "big truck" thing? Most 66s I've seen don't have framed side glass. Anyone else have a post-1964 pickup with framed side windows? Just wondering. Thanks.

My 65 3/4 ton has them as well ,from what I'm told it was a option. a lot of the large trucks have them such as the c 60s I have noticed.

Do those windows require different felt or weatherstripping? I love the look of them.

Re: Metal-framed side windows... what years?

My original truck '60 came with chrome ones (I still have, will probably part out to someone) I used a standard black pair on my doors.

Re: Metal-framed side windows... what years?

The metal framed glass was laminated.

The non framed glass was tempered or safety glass.

And yes, they require a different beltline kit for the doors to accommodate the difference in thickness. I converted my 63 stepside to the framed glass.

Re: Metal-framed side windows... what years?

Wow, I never knew there was these two options. All the ones I have owned did not have the frame and I can't recall seeing any with a frame. Now I'll have to start paying attention.

Option code A09 laminated glass. Includes metal frames.
See lower left of page below.
I see laminated glass listed as optional on the sheet for 1966 (below) and 1963, but not on the 1960 sheet. ? Did all trucks in 1960 have laminated side glass?

Not sure, but I can add that my framed glass came out of a 1961 St. Louis truck, short fleet 6cyl/3sp if it helps any. Mine were also black. The only chrome ones I've seen were 1960 personally, but I'm not sure if they were available chrome in other years.

So far from what I've gathered here and seen personally

1960 - chrome
1961 - black
1966 - black

Maybe some others will chime in and we can add to the list of what was available.

And a few pics of the conversion I did on my 63 with the 61 framed glass. I have pics somewhere on the build thread of the glass out prior to install if needed.

Re: Metal-framed side windows... what years?

late 62 for the switch to tempered glass I think, after that it was an option to get the laminated glass. my 64 1/2 ton has the option listed on the build sheet, I think it was a $35 upgrade! I will have to look next time I am out there.

I had heard that the laminated glass was common in the big trucks 63-66, the only other laminated set I have seen in the 64-66 was in a 3/4 ton gmc.

Re: Metal-framed side windows... what years?

Good info, OEM! Sounds like we have our answer. Now... what's the difference between tempered and laminated glass? What's the advantage of one over the other?

Re: Metal-framed side windows... what years?

laminated will crack ( it is the same as windshield glass) "but still useable" tempered shatters "BIG hole in door not nice in winter until you can find a new one".......the laminated any glass shop can cut you one ......the tempered on has to be FOUND USED/ ORDERED for the truck OR cut and sent out to get tempered
