oe color on the bottom side of the hood

I did a quick search and still got conflicting answers.I'm nowhere near ready for the hood too be painted yet but i like my plans well in advance.

I have one hood here that looks too have faded black under it with over spray(not sure of oe color on this one yet).

and another red hood thats faded red under it i'm pretty sure this ones been repainted though.

iirc the kids truck looked as it had black with yellow overspray. he has since painted it all black now.

i'm doing mine in 503 green i would like too know if the underside of the hood should be black or green. somebody out there still got a oe green hood?

black or green?

Re: oe color on the bottom side of the hood

I can look at the factory paint hoods I have around the shop I may have two or three with the factory color left on them. I say paint the underside and inside the fenders like the later models, body color. When you paint one body color underneath it wakes up the inside of the engine compartment and makes the truck look completed in my opinion. But I do late models stuff mostly [like 04 05 trucks, Z71's that is my biggie] and I may have been influenced by that to some degree. Jim

I had an ochre 71 that was extremely original. Bought it over 20 years ago. It was ochre on the bottom of the hood.

Re: oe color on the bottom side of the hood

Its the unpainted black primer coating that is exposed on original paint trucks. Some have factory overspray. I went w black paint to try and adhere to original.

Re: oe color on the bottom side of the hood

Here is my all original 1970. I say they were not painted black underneath. I would say that they are body colored about 12" around the perimeter and the rest is misted from over spray. The black shown is still the factory primer.

If you're looking for a correct restoration, this is a good example.

Re: oe color on the bottom side of the hood

There will be conflicting answers because no two look the same. Others have posted pics of all original trucks with less overspray.

I gree, but they were clearly not painted black. The perimeter would still be body colored with varying degrees of overspray over the black primer.

I have a 71 hood in original paint and it is overspray body color on the inside of the hood. The truck the hood came from is 518 medium green.

always have seen black, and I think most have also. could it be a plant-specific thing like crazy Janesville's centered 'deluxe' emblems?

Wasn't everything about Janesville built truck kinda crazy. Lol

The under side of the hood was just the factory black primer with body color over spray.

Re: oe color on the bottom side of the hood

My all original 68 stepper has a black paint on the underside of the hood with the saddle gold exterior color over sprayed in areas. This is an original paint truck too.

I have seen others that were original paint body colored also.

Maybe it was plant specific as someone else mentioned.
