Starting problem
Recently while driving my '69, I noticed that as I was accelerating hard or going up a hill, it would sputter and act like it was running out of gas. As I eased up on the throttle, it would run fine again. It has a stock 350, 4bbl, Rochester 4MV, Pertronix ignition that replaced the points. I changed the fuel pump, filter, distributor cap & rotor. I get fuel into the carb, and spark on #1 cylinder. It just turns but won't start. Any suggestions please?

Re: Starting problem
It did go under it's own power after it sputtered. I was driving on a flat surface, it sputtered, died, and would not restart.. Had to have it towed home and now it's sitting in the driveway.

Re: Starting problem
Check the distributor hasn't moved on you. They rotate clockwise if loose and retard the timing.
If it's loose, rotate it back ccw until it starts. |

Re: Starting problem
sounds like timing, check and make sure your cap isn't backwards. Will it flood after cranking for too long?

Re: Starting problem
Cap only goes on one way, and I do smell gas after cranking.

Re: Starting problem
The cap is as tight as it was when I changed the timing last. Won't budge.

Re: Starting problem
Maybe it's flooding!
Put the pedal to the metal until she fires up! |

Re: Starting problem
Back to square one!!
Re-time it! Pull #1 plug, put your thumb over the hole, bump it over till you feel compression, line up the timing tab and balancer at zero, pop the cap to see if the rotor is pointing at #1 plug. Advance the dizzy about 1/2 inch ccw and put the cap on and it should fire. While it's cranking look inside the carb. Shouldn't see any raw fuel. |

Re: Starting problem
After replacing the fuel pump & filter, changing the cap & rotor, checking spark & timing, rebuilding the carb, it was the dang vacuum hose that goes to the PCV valve, small crack on the backside! Runs great now!
