Tips Pre-Door Removal?
Hey guys,
I'm redoing my doors, because they just aren't right, and am wondering if there are any precautions I should take before I remove my doors from the truck? Things to take note of? Things to mark? Anything that will make putting the doors back on a little less painless would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys! |

Re: Tips Pre-Door Removal?
Good question. Before removing doors, hoods or trunks drill a small hole through the hinge into the body. When reassembling, line up the holes with a small screw driver, nail or similar item. This acts as a guide and aligns the hinge to the same spot on the body before you removed it. Seems to work well.

Re: Tips Pre-Door Removal?
I guess it depends what part your redoing. Its usually a good idea to mark the latch&hinges, just to make aligning it easier when the door goes back on.
If your pulling it to just do some bodywork, then there isn't a ton to worry about, especially if your leaving the door internals in place. I like to make a paint marker mark on the window roller and door handle shafts, but thats only because I NEED them to align a certain way or my knee hits them and my OCD goes effing crazy until I fix it.

Good diagrams for reference from the 63 assembly manual on the gaps for reinstall and the door components

Re: Tips Pre-Door Removal?
If your not painting. Just trace the outline of the hinges with a sharpie before you unbolt them. 9

Re: Tips Pre-Door Removal?
Do I need to remove the vent windows to remove the regulator/glass? And should the latch hardware be removed first? Want to make sure I do this right.

Re: Tips Pre-Door Removal?
Yes vent windows have to come out first. The doors are pretty easy to gut on these old trucks. Joseph

Re: Tips Pre-Door Removal?
If you are replacing the pins and bushings I wouldn't worry too much about marking them. You can trace where they are at now knowing they will need to move once all the slack is gone when hinges are rebuilt. If they are all good to go I will drill two 1/8" holes in each hinge into the cab so they go back exactly where they were when removed.

Re: Tips Pre-Door Removal?
I went with jeep door checks on mine. Work great. I used the rear jeep stops.
