454 in a 60-62 Frame

Hry guys ive been looking through alot of threads looking for somone thats done this. All i have seen is the 63+ frames, and they all talk about having to trim the top Frame flange for header clearance. Well with the Box Frame in my 62, im not sure i can do that.

Just seeing if anyone has done this, or if there are any pics. I had a very good healthy 454 and a built turbo 400 fall into my possession that i can use if i want and i am interested to see how it would work.

My truck does have the newer crossmember and suspension installed and does not have the tosion bar in it anymore so there is quite a bit of room.

any advice is appreciated.

Since your truck is a shortbed and depending on the length of the tail shaft on the TH400, you may be getting fairly close to the center of the X-member in your frame. Regardless you will have to fabricate a trans crossmember since the '60-'62 auto trans crossmembers are virtually nonexistent. As always I recommend using a short water pump, especially on a big block.

I figured the engine would have to be moved ahead a little. Yes I already fabbed the xmember for the th350 I put in it.

im mostly concerned about header clearance. I think I should be ok, since the frame is an Inch shorter but I am not positive, I guess I will find out when I stick it in there.

Yes a big block will need to be moved forward from the small block location, unless you modify the firewall. I just can't think of anyone on the forum with a big block in a '60-'62. Which engine mounts do you plan to use?

I think im just going to use the 67-72 mounts I have in it already and just modify as needed.

i think i might order a set of the Sanderson headers for the 73-87 and see how they work. I don't want a full length header, and those look pretty good.

We shall see. I might just stick with the SBC too. just a sweet deal with this 454.. built with good stuff and dyno sheet included, its had 11 runs on it, in a 69 Firebird of a friends, runs 12.4 and that's with a 342 gear...

so pretty stout, and mine to use. hahah could be fun!
