Went to the dark side...

Well not really. But I installed an HEI on my 250 six today. I ran that red wire in the pic directly to the battery for startup purposes. I have the proper wire end connector for the firewall side and wire and will finish that up this evening. I cheated and eyeballed where the original points distributor was pointing when I took it out and put the HEI in as close to that as I could then popped all the wires on like the old ones were. A few trial key turns and moves of the distributor and she fired right up. Gapped the plugs to .045. I can already tell it runs smoother and starts up easier.

Not saying I'd never do one. But I enjoy my truck and only drive it 1 or 2 times a month and go on 1 longer trip a year. If I daily drove it I'd certainly consider it. But I have really come to like that 250. Not many around when you go to shows and whatnot. I wouldn't mind freshening the 250 and sealing it up and a painting it a fresh coat of chevy orange.

that's not the dark side, but it sure is smart. Any reason you didn't use a Pertronix unit or something similar?

LOL....mainly because if it craps out you can (still all these years later) grab an HEI module at any auto parts store. I have a good spare for the glovebox too. The Pertronix you won't find just anywhere.

X2

I swapped to a HEI on my old 250 and it was a great upgrade. Ran much better, I am sure you will enjoy not having to tinker with it anymore

I have an HEI in my 292 in the '68 burb. Runs like a dream and gets great gas mileage.
