Re: Straight Six Engine Gurus, I Need Your Help!

It's a brand new head gasket n I have no smoke that comes out. N I tightened it according to what I saw on the specs. Do u think maybe I didn't do it right n that's why it leaks?

You get more torque with stroking and less high end RPM is the problem. lol With the 230 and 250's short strokes 6000-8000 rpm for them is WAY easier than it is for the 292 with its Long stroke. I find it funny though that I could pull 3rd gear up to 5000 RPM no problem with my Stock 292. haha!

Well that's IF its leaking at the gasket. I don't know what Torque Pattern you used. I believe on these it was between 75-90 foot pounds to torque the bolts to. Starting in the center and working outward torquing in 3 steps. You might want to pop the manifolds off and see if the head is cracked in the port. OH! Have you checked the Freeze Plugs? Their prone to leak after awhile.

Yo tj it's not leaking at the gasket n yes I did about 95 foot lbs n started in the center. What do u mean in 3 steps? Doesn't leak at the freeze plugs. If I can get a picture I'll post it up. Maybe I do have a cracked head. If I did, wouldn't it leak oil though?

The 3 steps meant...you do the entire pattern at 30 ft pounds....then the entire pattern at 60 ft pounds....then again the entire pattern at 95 ft pounds...just helps to seal it more evenly. Depends on where the crack is...if could have a hair line crack in one of the water ports but I'd think you'd see that burning in the exhaust...it would smoke white all the time.

Ah yes, I kinda figured that's what it meant. N I didn't do it like that. Water does escape our of those ports or so it seems. It doesn't smoke when it runs

Tj, so if I took the exhaust manifold n intake manifold n gasket but didn't change the water seals on the head. Do u think that's probably where my issue is? It seems like that's where the water may b seeping

Re: Straight Six Engine Gurus, I Need Your Help!

Best thing to do would be to run it and then pull the manifolds back off and see if you can locate where the leak is. Or if you can give me some close up pictures that would be cool..

Tj, so I went ahead n took off the manifolds after I poured some water down the radiator n sure enough. Rusty freeze plugs leaking. Popped then out n shot to autozone n O'Reillys n neither had a 9/16 freeze plug
