WOW!!! I am overwhelmed with the information coming from this group. I feel empowered with this much knowledge in one group. I was hesitant to take this project on, but my confidence has skyrocketed due to my association with this group. I look forward to many years with this truck. Thanks all!!!!

So my experience with my '71 Cheyenne Super long bed is -
350 SB, 400 Turbo, 4.11 rear = 12.5 hwy mpg Same drivetrain, no changes but installed 700R4 = 18 hwy mpg Love it! Blew 3rd in the turbo 400 so had to change it anyway... Randy |

The three speed tranny in my truck is slipping when cold. It is at the shop and they are going over the truck to look for anything I missed. If the tranny is in need of replacement, then 700R4 is next on my list

TH200 saves from having to shorten the driveshaft, and it doesn't have the ridiculous gear split between first and second. Consider that before you spend your money.

Like others have said, dont expect miracles here. Any milage above 15 mpg should be considered excellent. I think 12 mpg at 70 mph is pretty good. A overdrive should help but will also make a much more pleasant commute due to less noise. It will also add value should you ever decide to sell.

I'd get it running really clean, drive it for a while and make sure everything else is ok, then drop the $ on the trans.

My '67 250 3 speed gets 17mpg highway going 70mph. Not sure what gears are in it but it's right about 3000rpm.
