transmission linkage
I need some help on transmission linkage lining up. I mean is I ca get it all together as the shop manual says and then the column shifter is not horizontal. I have worked on this for two weeks off and on and cannot it g it there, it is always at two o’clock or higher.
Can anyone help this is a belair but I believe same at truck transmission and column shifter . Thanks in advance.

Doesn't really matter what you are working on it's a "how do I get my column shift 3 speed trans linkage to work smoothly.
1. Shift arms on transmission both in neutral so that the tail shaft/drive shaft will turn (rear wheels off the ground) . I'm pretty sure that the shift arms should point down with a column shift. (floor shifts have the arms pointing up) . 2. With the rods either off or loose line the two shift arms on the column up so that when you work the lever up and down the pin moves easily between the low-reverse arm and the 2nd-3rd arm You have to have the slots in the arms lined up so that you can move the lever easily. What usually happens is that one or the other of the levers gets too far one way and you get the pin in the shaft from the shift handle stuck on the wrong side of it. 3. You want the arms at a position where they can easily move the levers on the trans between gears. That usually takes having he shift handle inside at about 2 O'Clock on the steering wheel. I don't think those have any kind of neutral detent to center the so it's pobably best to get one hooked up with the linkage and then match the other to it.

that's what I do, get the shifter where you want it in neutral and line up the linkage for one, then line up the linkage for the other. you can also get the linkage lined up so in neutral everything is good, then put the column lever where you want it for neutral and tighten the clamp down on the shift box, right? (it has been awhile, but doesn't the column shaft have a clamp where it connects to the shift box at the bottom of the column?)

You didn't mention if you have replaced worn out bushings. I hope your not trying to adjust an old worn out sloppy set up.

You're gonna get the same answer here as you did on the Chevy Talk Forum- when in neutral the shift lever is not horizontal, despite what the book says- it's going to line up at about 2 o'clock..

I am trying to get the shifter on the top to be horizontal. I have set it up in neutral and hook it up as shop manual (and as suggest here in your advise) but when t it all hook up the shifter is not horizontal but higher .
see the shifter is higher and the connecting bolt is to the left and should be straight down up an Will try again, thanks

Today I'll go out and take a photo of my truck linkage and shift lever when it's in neutral, maybe that will help..

Right now the top lever is in reverse position from what I see in the photo.
Loosen the nut or set screw and move that lever down closer to parallel with the other lever. Worse case remove the cover and get everything lined up right and put the cover back on.
