Well took the bed off the 87 today couple pics, but..
It's still gonna be a PITA to changed both fuel pumps I didn't realize it but they're tucked up under where the cab sits! Looks like it was maybe a better idea to just drop both tanks. Anyone been there done that did you still end up dropping the tanks? bummer

I would think dropping the tanks would be the way to go but it will still be easier with the box off.

You must have an '87 with fuel injection. I've got an '86 and had to change the sending unit, but yes, the best way is to drop the tank. It's a pain in the arse, also when putting the tanks back up and connecting the fuel lines back.. good luck! Nice looking truck also...

I just removed the tanks complete with mounts from the frame. Placed a jack under the tanks and dropped them out. I didnt worry about the removing the straps holding the tanks in place.
Other option is removing rear cab mount bolts and jacking up the cab high enough to get the sending units out. I was able to raised the cab 6 inches by just taking out rear bolts. |

Guys, looks like when you undo the tank straps I should be able to slide each tank back to get to it.

I have had no issues getting to the connections/getting the pump/sending units out when replacing pumps with the bed off.

Dropping the tanks is not difficult or time consuming. Just make sure that you use penetrant on the bracket bolts - 4 bolts per bracket. you might want to clean, sand, repaint the brackets if necessary. I would chase the bracket bolts with a tap and lubricate the threads prior to reinstall also. I used concrete blocks and 2 x 4s to support the tanks prior to dropping them. Likely you will find a lot of dirt and debris between the tank shield and the bottom of the tanks.

IIRC, there's only enough room on a longbed truck. A shortbed truck has the sending units right under the back of the cab.
