I think my stepside side mount spare tire is better.

I realize it will take some muscle and a strong back to lift it off and back on but I think the side mounted spare is better than the underbed.

Today, on a class trip, the truck hauling the welder had a flat. It was a rental truck and once the students and instructor had wrestled the spare out from under the bed (and realized it was the wrong size wheel ), we had to plug the original tire. * I guess it's a good idea to make sure spare tires fit whenever you rent a vehicle.

Getting the spare back under the bed took 3 guys, two on their backs, under the truck. I think my stepside side mounted spare is a way better idea.

Any thoughts?

How about this?

I've always had the spare up in the bed.

Yes, it's better and that's why it was offered. It's right there, and obviously that is better...for when you ever do have a flat. The inside bed tire carrier for wide beds was offered for the same reason. For decades it has been no secret getting a tire out and putting the other back is something no one looks forward to. The greatest improvement ever was when they started using a crank-up cable set-up. Man that is sweet!

I prefer a spare up under the truck...permanently! When I removed the spare from under my '92 after 335k miles and not used since '95 once it was so crusty rusty I'm not sure I'd want it on my truck. In '10 when I pulled the spare from under a '72 K/20 I had since '91 it was the original 16.5 x 8.25 and 8-ply bias hiway tread. The spare up under my '72 has been there since I bought it in '01. The truck has one of those long arm type carriers with a tiny padlock, and I've never bothered cutting it. Once I do I'll probably get a flat

I think the spare tire on the side looks great on a step side.

i think the only problem with the side mount tires is with todays tires, the sun prematurely rots them and cracks the tire. youll have a good looking spare with lots o meat and within 2 years in the sun its cracked. but i love the look

I like the outside mount too. Just get a cover for it to prevent sun rot.

Be sure you buy the right one. They are different for long and short beds. Search the side to find the discussion and pictures.

I would think a fellow could make his own out of some angle and flat stock.
