Transmission Help
Love my 67 with its 292 and three on the tree, just hate the fact that in that year the transmission came without a first gear syncro. I have no interest in learning how to double clutch , just need to find a way to upgrade the transmission while still keeping the three on the tree. I have read here that a 68 or newer transmission and bell housing are needed along with modifying the driveshaft to achieve this. Any suggestions, and input will be greatly appreciated. I have not purchased anything as of yet. Hoping your input will point me in the right direction.

I'm not very familiar with the three speed transmissions but I don't think you would have to change the bell housing or clutch. If the clutch is working good I probably wouldn't even take it out. Just pull your three speed out and put the newer one in. I don't know about the drive shaft. You would have to measure the transmissions to see if there is a difference in length and check the output shafts to make sure the splines are the same. LockDoc

Re: Transmission Help
Do you know what transmission you have? I don't think the Muncie had a synchronized first but a Saginaw most likely would (post '66 model)

Re: Transmission Help
So the 67 model with the Saginaw came with a sycro first gear? If so I suspect I have a Muncie, and would like to know what I need to look for in a Saginaw if this indeed is the case and is it a direct swap over? If not what else do I need to purchase, what modifications must be made and any pointers where to look for such a critter. Thank you for your input

Re: Transmission Help
Well lucky you, ya got the oddball . just kidding, but I think this is the deal. In 67 the Muncie (non sycro) only came with the 292 pretty much. I'm sure you could get the sag. as an option. The good news is any 250 or V8 67 up probably has the upgraded tranny. I think you have to change the clutch disc. and if you can find the linkage ass. out of a trk with the sag. that would make life a lot easier. measure your tranny from the bellhousing back to the end of the tailshaft. the sagnaw are like 21.5 inches.
