Vandals ... hate it when that happens
Damn vandals. This is why we cannot have nice things. Some jerk bashed my mirror when I was parked along main street. My antennae was already broken from another incident.
But hey ... how about that mailbox?

Might not be vandalism, could be a lousy drive who almost side swiped your truck.

When it comes to mailboxes, there is no replacement for displacement....... Go big block or go home......

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
Never doubt that a person could've walked right into it. My wife was sitting in my truck in the passenger seat while i ran into the wal-mart to grab some charcoal back in august and a woman playing with her phone, not watching anything around her walked right into my mirror. knocking her self to the ground. my wife asked her if she was ok and the lady responded by saying. "those things are dangerous.", my wife said " yeah those cell phones just make the whole world a dangerous place." the woman said " no, those big metal mirrors." Wife said, "well if you had been watching where you were going and not your electronic leash, then it would've never happened.". I came out, hopped in and at the stop sign i asked "why is my mirror pointed at the ground?, wife started to laugh and told me the story. i'm glad I have those large below eyeline mirrors, because if they were a cheap plastic repops i probably wouldn't even have a mirror left. I've seen a delivery truck take out almost every mirror on a one way street before. The worst part was that the driver never stopped, he just turned at the stop and kept on truckin leaving a path of destruction behind
But hey! on the other note, I love the mailbox. Feel sorry for the person that hits that!

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
Vandals are just butt heads.
By the look of that square tube coming out of the ground, that may be a real engine. I'm also a member of a metal working forum. There are people there who make mailboxes for people living in rural areas, where there are people with nothing better to do than whale on the mailboxes with bats. They make the mailboxes from 1/4" steel, with a corresponding post. Some vandals have a metal bar out the side of the vehicle that takes a regular sheet metal mail box right off the post as they drive by. I'd like to see the carnage from that when they hit a solid mail box like that 1/4" steel job! Maybe take the dope's head off...

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
I convinced two college guys not to go mailbox whacking one night.
I was over at a friend's room just shooting the bull. His roommate was a real loser, the "vandal" you guys are discussing. The punk suggests hitting some mailboxes with another punk from the neighboring dorm room. I had to think fast! The following is as close as I can remember to what I told them, just making it up as I went. "You guys going to hit some mailboxes? Oh ****! I've got this friend and he told me 'the next punk that hits my mailbox, I'm going to KILL them.' So I'm over there and somebody nails his mailbox. This dude is crazy man! He pulls out this Ruger 10/22, you know, the one with the 50 round magazine, and he goes out the door, and just shoots up the back of their truck! I was there man! He just pumped 50 rounds into them as they drove off!!!!" "So like the next weekend I run into this other friend of mine, and he's had surgery. He tells me 'some crazy guy shot him' so I ask and he finally tells me, "we were hitting mail boxes and some crazy dude shot up Joe's truck. I got hit in shoulder." "OMG! I then remembered my crazy friend telling me, and this was after he shot up Joe's truck, 'IF I EVER FIND OUT WHO THOSE GUYS ARE, I WILL KILL THEIR FAMILIES' and believe me, my crazy friend will do it! I'm scared now because I know who did it and he might come after me!" I then go back to talking with my friend (who isn't a punk) like it's nothing. The two losers are quiet and don't say a word. A few minutes later they decide to go and shoot some pool at the student center. WINNING. *I later told my preacher about it and his wife said, "those who lie for the sake of the Lord saveth the mailbox." |

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
Why do people plaster the heck out of their mailboxes with reflectors? So, vandals can take better aim? I mean, I've never had my mail delivered at night.

I assume it's to keep drivers from taking them out.
I had a package stolen from my mailbox last year, I stopped getting mail at the house. OP: sorry about your side mirror. |

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
I have a gate and 4 power poles leading to the barn/shop
gate reads -- Private drive BEWARE OF DOGS 1st pole -- NO TRESPASSING ! 2nd pole -- GO AWAY ! 3rd pole -- TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT AND YOUR IN RANGE !!! 4th pole -- I OWN A SHOTGUN A BACKHOE AND LAND GET THE PICTURE ? I've had guys climb over the locked gate and walk 1/4 mile past all those signs just to ask if one of my 67's are for sale ? I live out in the country for a reason and have a driveway alarm . I can shoot clay birds off my front deck so when I see one of these morons coming down the driveway I just grab my 12 gauge and meet them half way ,More than a few have quickly turned around and headed back out ! |

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
They say the reason people get hit on the side of the road is because they become the focus of passers-by. I just expect people to drive on the road and not along side of the road. All I know is I'd rather replace my mailbox because someone messed up a lot more than if some sh!thead smashed it just for kicks. I'm sure not going to make it easier for them

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
On the vandalism--I've had the wannabe Tour de France guys ride into the back of my truck--even had one blow a stop sign out in the country and hit a buddies truck. Of course you're always to blame..
On the mailbox.... one friend of mine had problems with the plow truck taking his out all the time. He augered a 6 foot deep hole and plunked a 1 foot diameter pipe in it with 3 foot arms radiating outward, filled it all with concrete. He set it back sufficiently and next thing you know the city is billing him because the wing plow hit it and got damaged bad. He won that battle though.... |

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
Actually, I think he may have been liable in that case. He's lucky he won. I've been told it's illegal to "fortify" a mailbox. They are in the public right of way. They need to be able to be "break away". I've considered putting mine on a bearing with a real light break away stop. It sets normal till hit, then will break free and spin freely if hit. For vandals, I thought about adding a long arm out the back with a heavy object on the end, so when they whack it, it comes around and smashes the side of their vehicle in. That'll learn 'em! Thing is, booby trapping a mailbox is illegal
I have issues with the plows, too, when it's slush. They have never hit the box, but that slush will smash it in, misshape it, or even knock it off the post. I think enough mailboxes got trashed that enough people complained and now they seem to roll slower in such conditions. I clear snow or slush from my driveway and along the road to 20-30 feet ahead of my mailbox. I clear all the way back past the grass so they don't need to be close to my box and there's no slush to pick up by the time they get to my box...and driveway. I have minimal clean up at the end of my driveway when they clear after I have

Re: Vandals ... hate it when that happens
I buy every cheap mailbox I find at garage and yardsales ,I lose at least one per year as I live on a curvy road and my driveway is in a curve and people drive way too fast .

Good point about a cyclist hitting my mirror. It has a big dent on the front side so it was not a love tap. Your stories remind me of a guy in high school who broke his arm swinging a bat with 16 penny nails through it at his football coach's mailbox. Yes he got caught. Dumb ass.
Drove by the mailbox while on a leisurely Thanksgiving cruise today. Expected to see that it had thrown a rod out the side or froze solid at some point. No obvious damage externally. Could not easily discern the block casting number but interesting someone went through the trouble to fabricate some block off plates for the front water pump holes. Duct tape over the dizzy hole is long gone though.
