serpetine belt systems got a question??
I want to run a serpetine belt on my new 383. I really can't afford to go with the March pulley kit. I was wanting to go get a set up from the bone yard. My question is, the belt systems that I am looking at take a new style alternator. You guys that are running these type belts on your truck, how are you setting this up? Are you wiring in the new alt, or using your old alt. I have done converted over to a one wire alt on my 72. I would like to see some picture if possible. I was hopeing to be able to do this and run my alt.
So please help me out here.

Not to hijack, but I'm interested too. Which type of water pump do you need, long, neck or short?

It is a powermaster that I bought from Scoggins, part number 67294 140 Amp GM Early Style Polished One-Wire Alternator. Powermaster’s early style alternators offer not only the best in looks but also these performance advantages: · True one-wire or three wire hookup · Hi output at idle · Proof of Performance tag · 100 amp or 140 amp versions It bolted right in to my old brackets when I did the conversion

I always thought that you could simply change the pulley on the alternator, but I am guessing by this thread that this isn't correct.

There are serp brackets for two different size alternators. The ones I have are for the CS-144 which are the larger of the two. The other (smaller) alternator is the CS-130 which I belive is the same bolt pattern as yours (so take your alt. with you). You also did not mention if you have A/C or power steering. You can put a serp belt pulley on your alt. and use it but you will need the water pump off of the serp vehicle and power steering pump (they all have them). Also there are ones with and without smog pumps the ones without look much cleaner on our trucks. I just took the whole works Alt., Pwr Steering pump, A/C compressor, Water pump and braces (be sure and take picturesof how they attach).

I do have AC and P/S. The AC compressor is the long one, was going to change to short one. So Larry what you are telling me is that I will need the ALT, P/S pump and A/C compressor for this modification? I really don't want to get one with the smog pump. My next question is how do you wire these new alt in?

What I am saying is that you can probably use your alt. you will just need to make sure you get the right serp bracket that will fit your alt.. There are serp brackets for two different size alts. Also it is much harder to find serp brackets that do not have a smog pump mount (just be aware of that). You can use the ones with the smog pump mount without the smog pump, I have even heard of someone grinding off the smog pump mounting tabs to get a cleaner look.

You must use a reverse flow water pump!
