Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
Hey folks,
My lovely wife has a 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd that's a running driving truck that needs some lovin'. I'll post pics when I get home but I have a few questions. She wants it LOWER- its already on dropped spindles ,lowered springs. 1. I'm thinking air ride -is there a ready made kit for these Jimmys ? I'm concerned for her safety so I'd like to put a full roll cage in it ,4 pt belts . 2. Is there a ready to weld roll cage kit that will fit under the hard/soft top? It needs a updated interior but we can handle that.. Thanks for looking and your input into her 72 Jimmy 2wd build. She has owned this Jimmy longer than me so it's important to her it be done right!!LOL. BB

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
An airride kid for a 2wd 1/2 ton 72 pickup will be the same (assuming your Jimmy is a factory 2wd truck.)
No bolt in roll cages that I can think of. Most of the roll bars of the era are more for looks than actual protection. S&W Racing used to make a kit, but it still required welding. You'll probably get some heat for wanting to put a cage in a 2wd on air ride. Cages look better on the lifted 4wds (IMO), but it is true there is little safety with these rigs if they roll.

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
I understand the 4x4 vs 2WD cage drama but she drives the snot out of this Jimmy and I need to keep her in it.
Some of you may have seen the truck from WAY back , we have had it a long time. Does anyone have a suggestion on a air ride kit they have used on a 2WD or truck? I sure wish there was a basic cage kit I could add on too... BB

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
Air Ride technologies for the suspension. As for the roll bar/cage, we custom made ours. Yea, it would look better without it, but Im more into safety than I m into looking good. The cage is welded to the frame (front middle and rear, and has swing outs for the doors.)

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
That's really nice and a Jimmy to boot.
On the cage I really want to tie in the windshield frame, and extend all the way to the tailgate. If it could be used to stretch the soft top that would be great! I'll check out the air ride info, but I know nothing about the systems and what is good and bad...I really want to hear from someone who has it installed and loves it. BB

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
Ok I had some other 67-72 Chevy dudes come look at the truck and suggested a panard bar replacement to take the wiggle out of the tail? Can ya'll help me figure out what to buy?
Oh and we found a new hard top and a spare hardtop-when it rains it pours. I know its been a long time but we owned this Jimmy 20 years so it does not seem like so long. Still want to do body bushings that are worn out- need a suggestion on parts? The spring in the back seem way to soft (4-6) lowered spring is there a harder spring but still lowered? We have began work and need some help picking out parts and such- any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I took the air ride out of my 71 Jimmy. It's currently posted on the parts for sale.

LMC sells the replacement rubber body mounts but I put some in and within a year they were all cracked and deteriorating. Check out Prothane, they make some nice poly mounts.

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
I know it takes me a while to do things but...
All the brakes are done. All the springs have been replaced with stock. New Shocks. New Diff All new body bushings front to back. New Hickey cage on order for it and on the way.. Welded in all new seat mounts and patched a few floor holes. We are trying to get it ready for the paint and body man -same color but fix the flaws in the hardtop and paint to match the Jimmy inside and out. Paint cage to match too... Still gotta do a parking brake cable re-do this weekend. We are making headway slowly but surely.. BB

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
Ok its outside for the first time in a long time- on stock suspension! Tires look a little small now...but I have a question? What are you guys doing for seats and interior? I dont have the stock interior and the seat I have are too tall on the stock stands...is there any vehicle that works really well as a transplant? I am gonna install a Hickey cage soon also... BB

Re: Ms. Wendy's 72 GMC Jimmy 2wd.
More progress this weekend.
The Hickey family cage is a nice product and fairly straight forward install too. Nice to have a spot to anchor the shoulder belts too, we added those! Thought about tying into the windshield with a tube or two but I worry about body twist and putting pressure on the frame? BB
