manual trans crossmember issues
im installing a straight 6 in a frame that had a factory v8. once i got the engine bolted up to the bellhousing i noticed the engine is too far forward. is there different locations for the manual crossmember between 6 and 8 cylinders? is the crossmember itself different?

Re: manual trans crossmember issues
Your motor stands need to move back. 2wd v8 uses forward motor stand location, straight 6 and 4wd v8 use rearward motor stand location.
check your frame there should be holes for the motor stands to be able to be moved back... at least that is what I understand. |

Crossmember is different and it is also moved back. Holes should already be in the frame. Keep in mind you will also need L-6 clutch rods and z-bar mount, they are a little different. A lot of people put the V-8 in the 6 cylinder position to help with weight bias. I left my engine in that spot when I replaced it since the PO already had it there. You can put a V-8 in the 6 cylinder mounting position, but you can't put a 6 cylinder in the v-8 position.

Re: manual trans crossmember issues
Not a matter of the engine stands, bellhousing to far forward.

Re: manual trans crossmember issues
A manual transmission uses a crossmember that that attachs to the bellhousing not the trans . If I unbolt the bellhousing to move it back it no longer can be bolted to the crossmember.

Re: manual trans crossmember issues
Man, the more we see from the 67 72 guys it looks like there are two different bellhousing crossmembers. I always had v8s in the 67 72 trks so I never noticed. I've switched a half dozen 60 66 trks and the crossmembers were always the same. Looks like ya need to find a crossmember for a inline I guess. that's kind of a hassle.

Re: manual trans crossmember issues
Thats why you need the 6 cylinder crossmember, which mounts several inches to the rear of where the v-8 crossmember mounts.
