Cowl Vent Shave

For those of you that shaved their vent, would you recommend shaving it yourself or buying the piece already made like here for $56+:

I guess that works if you have air or don't plan on driving the truck for extended periods on the road without air but it's a rather silly thing to do from my view point as you cut off a major portion of the ventilation inside the cab.

71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Cowl Vent Shave

Everybody has different needs. I will have AC and dont need the headaches of all the rust etc. that goes with the vent. When i took the time to see and fix all the damage created by the design, I easily decided to get rid of it. The truck is custom. If I went with restoring it, different story.

If that's a sheet metal piece it saves quite a bit of welding on the original to get rid of the ribs.
When I did mine I only found fiberglass ones which wouldn't work because I welded mine in to get rid of the seems on the side also.

Re: Cowl Vent Shave

Ok good answer. the 57 Panel I had in the mid 70's didn't have air and those vents let a lot of air through in the Texas summer that I drove it.

Re: Cowl Vent Shave

like all customization on our trucks, you need to balance how much time you spend vs how much cash you spend
while $56 doesn't seem like a lot of money; for that one item, ten of those time savers is a lot
is spending a few hours filling and welding worth the cash spent?

kim welded panels in his cowl vent, i used long hair filler: look at both of our builds if you want to see either method
while your at it weld up the holes for the hood to cowl weather strip, it looks better glued down
i did not weld them closed, just glued the rubber over the holes
