Power Steering gear box and Tie bar help
Howdy,
In the process of giving new life to the beast (1973 Cheyenne) I took on as a project a few weeks ago, the latest issue is the need for a new power steering gear box and tie bar on the driver side. I found a stock on on O'reilly's for $150 and have seen them go all the way up to $700. This is a hunting/fishing weekend truck, will the O'reilly's one do the job or do I need a more heavy duty, higher ratio gear box? Also which tie rod would work best with the recommended gear box?

2wd or 4wd? Ride height? Tire size?
I'd consider a junkyard one or rebuild what you have.

I think the pick and pull near me just got a 73 Cheyenne, I'll go see what I can grab off of that.

With a 6" lift I'd consider crossover steer. You want a 2WD box for that I think. You need some other parts too.

Re: Power Steering gear box and Tie bar help
The OReilly one will "Do the Job" for your limited use application.
With that said, I would suggest getting a non-re manufactured box if at all possible. Between the mechanic I use to do work I don't have time or knowledge to do and myself, we have seen too many reman boxes take a crap after a couple of years to feel good about using them. As far as the tie rod, I would personally stick with MOOG or equivalent. while I like working on vehicles, I don't particularly like re-doing jobs sooner than needed. Life expectancy of the cheaper parts is likely going to be a couple of years. |

Re: Power Steering gear box and Tie bar help
I put one from oreilys in my truck in 2012. i have had no problems with it whatsoever..no slop in the center, no flaking coating, I would recommend it.
