5.3 Starter Issues

I am having issues with my 5.3 LS swap. I have a 54 Chevy 3100 and I have transplanted a 5.3 Vortec onto an S10 frame with a 4L60E. I bought a starter on CL and it makes a grind noise on start-up. The starter appears to be an 11 tooth reduction drive starter. When I shop online, I am seeing that the 2003 Silverado 1500 5.3 (what I have) is recommended to have a 9 tooth direct drive starter. Are these two interchangeable? Also, could this be a shim issue? Ans if so, how do I calculate how many shims to use?

Thanks in advance for all the help!!!

Re: 5.3 Starter Issues

You don't use shims on an LS starter.

Re: 5.3 Starter Issues

Really? Hmm... Thanks Wasted Income!!! That's some news I guess... maybe bad news. I wonder if its my starter or flywheel? I'll have to check the starter to see if it operates properly and quietly. Then I guess the next step would be to check the flywheel to make sure its straight. Any ideas here?

Also I did pick the starter up on CL and it is an 11 tooth drive reduction starter and I have seen that alot of parts places specify a 9 tooth starter. Would this be an issue?

Re: 5.3 Starter Issues

I've never counted the teeth on any of my LS starters, so I'm of no help there...but I have mix and matched junkyard and parts store starters to many LS engines over the years and never had the problems you're having.

Maybe someone else has and will chime in.
