65 C10 overdrive wont disengage
I just picked a 65 C10 with 3 on the column and overdrive. On the ride home it worked great, but now I can't get it into reverse! I even tried pulling it backwards with my Jeep and it won't roll, as it's designed to do when the od is engaged. The handle pulls and moved the lever on the tranny but won't disengage.
Can I pull the solenoid and free the rail that way? Any ideas appreciated, very happy to be back restoring an old truck! Scott

Scott:
Not sure. Never had that problem with mine. Here are the manuals that contain a trouble shooting section that may be worth a read. Regards, Steve New Orleans http://devestechnet.com/Home/HowTo#driveline |

Re: 65 C10 overdrive wont disengage
Scott, it doesn,t matter if the manual lever is in or out. I leave mine in overdrive most of the time. I can,t shift into reverse until I cut the power to the solenoid. here,s a pic of the pawl. you can see where the solenoid rod hooks into the pawl. the nexted pic is the shift rail you see the rod that comes from the reverse gear shift fork in the tranny. it does the same thing as the O/D lever that the cable goes to.

Re: 65 C10 overdrive wont disengage
Thanks for the replys, those manuals look like a wealth of information, I'll get into them after work. Thanks for the pictures, they help. How far should the od lockout lever move? Mines only moving about 1/2 inch, and reverse won't even go in at all. Will not roll backwards, is something stuck? Should I go and run it around the block to get it to release?

Re: 65 C10 overdrive wont disengage
Ok I got it fixed, thanks a million for the pictures and info!
I pulled the solenoid out to check it and it came right out, no resistance. I read where you have to turn it to disengage the rod, so I turned it and pushed it in, then turned it straight and couldn't pull it out! So the last guy in there didn't put the solenoid in correctly and the rod wouldn't come out! Awesome, love this old truck! On to the next thing! Scott
