Electric Fan Questions
My buddy had 2 subaru imprezas. Blew the motor in his rally car, crashed his other, so he swapped the motor out of his other one and put it in the rally car. he had 2 electric fans kickin around so i took advantage and scooped them from the useless parts bin that hed never use.
They are both 1 foot wide, would one be enough to cool or would i want both? I was thinking run one through a temperature switch and relay and so on, so it comes on in normal driving conditions, then in the city driving have one hooked up through just a switch so i could switch on if need be. Any input would be great, want to do this while i swap the rad support so i have the rad out already. |

Re: Electric Fan Questions
Depends alot on the cfm of the fans..and if you have enough room to squeeze both in there.. I have dual fans on mine..idling both run..on the road it drops back to one. Mine run thru relays with a 20 degree difference in the setpoint..lot of difference in your climate and mine..ha ha

Re: Electric Fan Questions
Do you have an overheating problem? If not, I would not add fans.
I live in southern HotZona with 110 degree Farenheit summer temperatures. I have a 454 C20 and added a small fan out of a Geo Metro only to assist with A/C cooling due to 134A conversion. This fan is powered via a relay controlled by the power supply wire at the A/C compressor. Otherwise, I do not need extra cooling assist for the engine. |

Re: Electric Fan Questions
Make sure you build a proper shroud for the fans so they direct air over the entire radiator.

Re: Electric Fan Questions
I read something once about using an 18" Jeep Fan in place of the stock engine fan. I cannot remember if this only works on the 67-72 trucks or if it also works on the 73-87 too, it fits into the shroud from what I saw. Anyone done that?

Re: Electric Fan Questions
If your fans have an enclosure around them that you can reuse you might be able to get away with not building a special shroud. I would try them with the stock enclosures and see how it works out.

Re: Electric Fan Questions
Mounting holes will be the issue. You may have to fab some brackets to attach them.

Re: Electric Fan Questions
I run Ford Windstar dual fans. I prefer electric fans so it can warm up a bit faster in winter (not usually much colder than -15°C here), and so they can move air in traffic in summer (not much hotter than +38°C here).
I trigger the fans via a Ford Escort fan switch (BWD:TFS13, turns on at 212°F, off at 192°F, you will need pigtail BWD:PT764. Best is yank the whole thing from the wreckers). The Escort fan switch threads right into the passenger side head. The fans are switched with a Cavalier/Sunfire starter recall relay (thousands of them in the wreckers, they are on the driver's side next to the rad). Sorry, no part number.

Re: Electric Fan Questions
I use a ford fan also (TBird I think) is a 2 speed although I only use the high speed. Control it with a thermostat screwed into the water jacket. Pic a part special. Cheap! Going on 4 years and works perfectly even when its 120 in bullhead city

Re: Electric Fan Questions
With the rad support off i could get a look at both of the fans sitting on there.
Both side by side they fit perfectly and cover 90% of the rad. about an inch ontop and on the bottom isnt covered by the fan shroud thing. Seems perfect to me! Thinkin about buying the fan sending unit (Summit Part# BCI-75029) which goes right into the block or intake. Turns on at 185*F and turns off at 165*F. Comes with wiring instructions, which is a pretty simple wiring setup. |
