V8 Vortec swap.

So I am torn in the direction I want to go with engine swaps.

One option is the vortec V8. I would like to find a 5.7L, but the 4.8, 5.3L would be options based on cost, and what jumps into my lap!

I want to eventually get a 5 speed manual (most likely a T5, but maybe a NV4500).

1)
How much of a PITA is taking an automatic trans motor and mating it to the manual trans? Does the ECU need to be changed? or can it be flashed? or is it a no-go?

2)
Is the gauge cluster mandatory to the ECU's function?

easy the other way around is much more difficult tuning wise

not at all , will run without gauges , but ill advised

Re: V8 Vortec swap.

Why is it easier to swap an automatic engine onto a manual transmission?

Re: V8 Vortec swap.

My advise to you is to go and bang around the lsx forums a little just to grab a better overall grasp of the concept

You can set them up anyway you want. Which auto are you going to start with? If a th350 or 400 then I am pretty sure you could just straight swap a manual in no problem. If using an electronic trans then you will need to reprogram again as the ecu would no longer need to control the trans

I also still say FITECH is the way to go no crazy fabrication needed to fit your motor just basically replace the carb

Re: V8 Vortec swap.

Howell efi has some great harnesses with all the plugs that you need, and they also sell pre programmed ecu's tailored towards your needs as well. We just wrapped up a Vortec 454/4L80E swap in our '82 6.2L diesel truck. We used the Howell harness and ECU and they worked very nicely. Also, gauges work just like they would in a regular set up, the Howell harness includes a tachometer output if you want to run a tach.
