how to prep new fender
i got a new front fender from classic parts for my 1963 k-10 stepside. it has the black primer coat on it.i have the truck primed in epoxy primer with the catylist additive. i'm not real sure what to do with the new fender DA with 80 grit and shoot with the same primer as the rest of the truck or go right to high build primer. i havent done this stuff for thirty years and all the new technology makes my head spin.

This should show you any highs & lows. You might have to spray a coat or two of polyester high build primer to fill any low spots than guide coat and block 220-320. Final block with 400-500. Spray a sealer with the epoxy using reducer 3-4 parts that will cover any sanding scratches. Base & clear coat... Hope this helps. Dave.... |

Not knowing what exactly the factory coating is, and if it will react with your particular primers, I would strip it down to bare steel and spray your epoxy.
That said, have you checked the fitment of your new fender? How well do the 2 pieces spot welded together, fit together surrounding the headlight?

I had to spend a lot of time fitting my aftermarket fenders, even before finally heavily modifying them. I stripped mine down to bare metal before prepping the same as the rest of the sheetmetal.

the fender was gappy where the two parts meet,among some other proper fitting issues . i was able to get those all tightened up ad fit properly. probably since the unknown product on the fender from the vender i am gonna agree easier to strip it down know rather than get to paint and then have something happen. thanks
