Wheel and tire help

Hey everyone,
I need some help with tires and wheels. I have a 67 c20 with the Eaton H52 rear end and am planning on adding airbags. We have shortend the frame to a sb and I have found a stepside for it. I am trying to figure out the widest tires I can stuff under a stepside and still be able to air it out. I am looking for any ideas on tire sizes, rim width and back spacing if possible. I am also looking for a good size for the front tires with back spacing. I am thinking 17 inch rims but am open to bigger rims. Any idea are greatly apreciated.
Thanks

Re: Wheel and tire help

You have a very unique combination. Not likely to find anyone else who is lowering a C20 step and looking for a fat tire.

With that said, I THINK you can get a 285 width tire on a 9" rim in the back. I KNOW you can get a 275 tire because that's what's on the back of my short step.

275 55 17 on 17x9 wheel with 5" backspace using 71-72 rear axle.

In your case, I would consider buying the tool you can get to simulate wheel/tire size or if you are good with a tape measure start put down all your dimensions and calculate it.

Another option is to get a wide rim and junk tire and mount it up working backwards from how that combo fits to get where you need to go.

Re: Wheel and tire help

The truck is being built by a bunch of high school kids and we decided it would be cool to have a 3/4 ton short box step side. How much wider is the 71-72 axle compared to the 67 and what back spacing do you think I would need to fit the 275/55/17?
Thanks

Re: Wheel and tire help

I can't answer that on the 3/4 ton trucks. The 1/2 ton guys have been sharing that info for years, but as for your combo, it will be an opportunity for the kids to learn some math and measuring.

Re: Wheel and tire help

Yep today they took the measurements and found out it would be real tight to fit the 275's with it totally aired out. The rear disc brakes are off a 3/4 ton and I think that limited things. We are looking at running 255/55/17 or 255/50/17 on all 4 corners. I am thinking 5 bs in the rear but not sure about the front yet. Does anyone know how those size tires would look on all 4 corners? Any idea on back spacing on the front?
Thanks
