Cracked windshield 71

Guys

Driving home today a big rock cracked my windshield on my 71. Insurance is replacing it at no cost to me. Safelite is having hard time finding glass and then they want me to take the truck to the shop (not the mobile service). I'm in southern California.

Any issue with driving the truck for a couple of days? Its safety glass, right? Laminated?

Also any issues to watch for during and after install?

Thanks

Re: Cracked windshield 71

I have multiple cracks on my glass, been that way for many years.. Can get a ticket for it but oh well..

I hear Precision is the best gasket, but be aware if you have chrome trim certain years use a different gasket as the shape of the chrome lip that goes in the chrome is different.

I wouldn't let Safelite touch anything I own after reading the complete BS they pulled on this guy:

Crap business practice, plain & simple.

Re: Cracked windshield 71

I called googled classic car window replacement and found a mobile guy to do mine. He wanted to charge me $400 to do it with the trim or $180 without the trim. I went for without. I drive mine on the freeway everyday so I figured I'd have to do it again eventually. I just kept my trim. Safelight quoted me $550 to do mine without the trim!!!

Re: Cracked windshield 71

Too bad you are so far away. My installer does the windshield with or without tint for $140. They charge an additional $40 for the seal that has the groove for the trim or without. $180 worst case. I've done 5 or 6 with them in the last 10 months.

I couldn't get safelite to install a windshield in mine. They said they didn't work on older vehicles

Re: Cracked windshield 71

I contacted them for a quote here in Kansas. They told me they wouldnt replace the windshield if it had the chrome piece. Said that they had cracked to many of those kinds of windshields and had to stop doing them.
Im sure its different from shop to shop.

Install them yourself it's really not as difficult as so many think . $99.00 windshield and $40.00 for the gasket .

Updates...

They did send a new gasket, made by Precision, but it didn't fit at all. So we were forced to reuse the old gasket. Guy promised it wouldn't leak, but we had rain this week, and its leaking in the lower driver side corner. So I called him back and he said he could "glue" or seal it in. he said he didn't do that before?

I wanted to ask you:
1)Is the glue the correct way to do this? Or did he just do a bad job the first time?
2)Can you tell me what manufacturer/part number you use for the gasket?

My truck isn't perfect, but its original paint and id hate to see the dash rust

thanks!

On rubber gaskets the correct sealant is liquid butyl rubber. It stays flexible and doesn't harden up. Whatever you do, don't let them use silicone. You will regret it forever.

Re: Cracked windshield 71

Should I find a new gasket?

How do I know if they use rubber or try to use silicone? Color different? Application?

Do you have a recommendation for a good gasket manufacturer and part number?

Thanks

Re: Cracked windshield 71

I've used the Precision gaskets with success. I don't have a part number for you. If the windshield is in and the gasket isn't cracked, I wouldn't try to pull the windshield out at this point. If the gasket is cracked, I would use a razor knife to cut the gasket at the pinchweld to save the glass.

The butyl rubber will be black and gooey - it's like super snot. In fact, we used to call it gorilla snot. It can be applied from a caulking tube or with an applicator that looks kind of like an oil can. The easiest way to be sure is to ask.

Re: Cracked windshield 71

Just went thru this on my 72. There evidently are two types of windshields for these models. Green tint with a sun band and green with no sun band. I chose the no sun band after not being able to find a clear one ANYWHERE. Took it to a shop that has done my glasswork for 30 years and the young man broke the new windshield installing it. I drove it broken for a few short trips and then I requested the owner come out of retirement and do it himself. The second time went smoothly and the green tint is not really an issue. Bottom line is find an old school installer if you are not comfortable doing it yourself, I'm not. There are a few tricks some of the mobile glass installers people in our area evidently are not taught. Mine came at a total cost of $280.16 . They ate a windshield and an extra gasket. Better them than me. Good luck to you.
