60-66 4x4 info

Hey all. I'd like too pick some of your very knowledgeable brains for a second. On 60-66 4x4's did the motor, trans, and t-cases have any #'s on them per unit as far as being original to that truck or chassis? How about the axles? I would assume the motors had the vin/suffix code stamped on them like all the cars of then but I know the truck stuff did some weird stuff back then. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Again this site is AMAZING!!!!

So you stole a truck and want to part it out without getting in trouble?

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

There's Date Codes like the passenger car line. If you give us some numbers we can trace their origins. If you supply the VIN we can tell you where to look on the truck.

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

Uhhhh..... I'm just curious as too look when i find one i want to restore. I'm a purist at heart and like too keep stuff as original as possible when i do something for myself. Don't jump to Ludicrous accusations!! Thats odd you'd say that? But ok. I'm simply asking what was stamped with vin#'s and such. Looking for some concrete answers not guesses or maybes. Thanks.

I know how to decode vin's and such, and date code's are obvious. i'm talking about matching #'s or suffix codes specific to certain equipment used on that model or year. Like transmissions, Transfer cases and axles.

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

For these trucks the stampings on the engine, trans, and axle were all done at their respective Component assembly plants. The Vehicle assembly plant did no vehicle-specific stamping; there were no VINs stamped on those components like was done on Corvettes of the same era. The only VIN stampings were the ones on the frame done at the Vehicle assembly plants.

So the codes you will find may say it was a C10/20/etc assembly and the cast date codes may say it was correct for the time frame when your truck was assembled, but there is no way to say for sure whether they came in that particular truck.

At some time I'm sure this changed due to Federal rules aimed at curbing chop-shop activity, but it had to be after 1967. On these trucks if it all looks original it probably is. There is not enough money in counterfeiting them to make it worth a person's while to go to all that trouble. Corvettes on the other hand...

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

You would have to understand Aerotruk63's sense of humor. Its all just in fun. You have been looking for K20 axles I thought ? Im confused that now your trying for "numbers matching" but don't want to buy a complete truck ? Good question on if the VIN is on those parts , never looked. They are dated and the codes for the rear axle etc and date stamps will be on 1965 and 1966 protecto plate . I'm guessing here but since trucks do not have vins on the blocks I doubt its on the transmission or transfer cases.

I see you have a 68 427 Belair and 69, Im into those big cars myself.

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

My apologies, I sometimes like to think that the written word will come out funny.

I have all the Shop Manuals Canadian and American. These manuals show you where to search for date codes and VIN"s. The special information books will tell you the applications of the codes as well as the RPO's that go along with them.
Generally you'll find the VIN number on the cab on the windshield pillar or the roof pillar.
The plant designation and production number can be found, depending on make, on the top of the drivers side frame rail. Also depending on year and make on the side of the frame rail on the passenger side, between the cab mounts.
The engine as you know, depending on year and make vary.
Same for the rest of the drive line for Plant, Application & Date of manufacture. It's not as clear cut and straight forward as one might think.

If you were to purchase the CD's of all the shop manuals you could get a broad perspective of where you would be looking on certain years and make.

Sorry I ticked you off, we tend to like to razz a member now and then, it was all meant to be in fun.

We can go on for hours about investigating a truck down to early and late production numbers and such not.

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

Great info. Appreciated!!!! I didn't think they put that much stock in the "numbers" game back then on the 4x4's but i was just curious. Found several 65-66 4x4's that were missing either trans, t-cases or original axles and wondered what would be involved in finding the original stuff. Easy enough.

I know the muscle car scene all too well. I know the suffix codes and dates are what makes our cars worth more when they are original. I've been dealing with this stuff for a while. BE code 12 bolt rears, IR code 427's blah blah blah. Thats what is challenging too me about restoring a car or truck to original. Some claim it is but there is soo much more the average enthusiast just don't know about. Tower hose clamps, T3's, etc... lol . It gives me a headache just thinking of it.

Again, Any "accurate" info is appreciated. If this has been covered before, someone please direct me to a thread or two.

Thanks again!!

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

I'm always looking for a complete K20 65-66 truck, but I like to find the right deal that fits what i'm looking for. I'm looking for a complete roller truck that hopefully the body isn't great. I have a 65 crew cab i'd like to make a "correct" K20 crew cab out of. It just seems i find bits and pieces of them here and there. I won't jump on a truck just because its a k20 that body style. It has too be the right one for me. I've been buying T221's and other specific parts just for having spares. I've got time so i'll hold out for a good project truck. I don't want to part a driver out.

Even tho these are just "trucks" . We have too face the fact that these things are getting harder too find especially in original and unmolested conditions. I don't want too be that guy that hacks a nice truck up for a project. lol

Aero.. All good, not offended or ticked by any means. caught me off guard at first, you'd be surprised how many jump to conclusions. Seen too many cases of that recently. Thx!!

60-66... I love the big cars. They are amazing! I was lucky too buy back my dads 69 427 conv he bought new. I grew up in that car. He sold it in 89 after my mother passed (i was 14) and i found it in 06'. Bon Jovi's neighbor owned it.

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

A while back there was a complete running driving factory black and white 1966 K20 Custom on Craigslist but the body was beat . I believe one owner , not a straight panel on it but solid Montana ? truck. That would have been a good candidate for your build possibly. I'm always looking , with help . If I here of anything I will pass it on to you.

We have a 67 SS427 convertible I've owned 20 years now. Are you going to any of the Impala conventions ? This year is in Springfield IL .

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

That truck sounds like something i would of been really interested in. I don't care at all about the body. I just want the complete chassis to build a "period correct" 65 K20 crew cab. Thanks for keeping an eye out. Very much appreciated!!

I hope to go to more shows this year. Been to Spearfish a handful of times in the past. Definitely making it to the Muscle Car nationals this year in November. A gentleman i know owns one of the largest Yenko collections around (camaro's, chevelles, and nova's) . Owns an amazing collection from a 69 ZL1, 69 427 Yenko Nova to Matching Super Duty 63 421 Catalina's, and supercharged T-birds!! I just get lost every time i step foot in that place!! I was born in the wrong era!!! lol

I would love too see pics of ur 67! Rare car there. That hood is just a thing of beauty!! I go to the Impalass427 site daily. Love it. Just get tired of all the BS and the Politics that go on there with some of the "concrete" members. But its a wealth of information!!! Mark has done an amazing thing.

Re: 60-66 4x4 info

Great thread!
I just dragged home the steamiest pile of '62 K10 anyone has EVER seen.
Long-Step small window. It's all dents and rust, held together by holes. More of the sheetmetal is not there than is.

My son looked at it with me, and said "Well... the dash is nice, anyway."
High-hump on the floor and the dash are the only salvageable body pieces. The rest is scrap.
But I wanted the chassis and running gear. I've got everything but a cab to put it back together--I too want to build a relatively period-correct factory 4x4.

I think on my 65 K20 GMC the VIN or something like that is stamped on the frame rail somewhere. I might be thinking of a different truck in my fleet but for some reason I think its the 65.
