Rebuild or Replace Power Steering Pump

Something around the power steering pump is leaking. Not sure if its a hose or the pump itself. Since I'm going to take everything apart to replace hoses and clean the pump and mounting bracket (pump is a oily greasy mess), should I rebuild or just replace the pump/reservoir assembly? No problems with the power steering just leaking.

Re: Rebuild or Replace Power Steering Pump

keep your reservoir. The pump body come out of it and is sealed with a big o-ring around the pump body. That way you keep your correct reservoir and just replace the pump. EZPZ

Re: Rebuild or Replace Power Steering Pump

With what was stated above, my power steering pump housing had a big dent in it and it was leaking around the body O-ring, i took it apart and tried to straighten the dent but it wouldn't stop leaking so i had to get a new rebuilt pump, it took about 3 trys of the same part number to get one with the return tube in the proper orientation to work well with my setup.

Re: Rebuild or Replace Power Steering Pump

looks like I might have gotten lucky. I replaced the return hose cleaned everything up the best I could and looks like the leak is fixed. I'll keep an eye on checking for leaks this next week or so.

I may have finally gotten the last of the oil leaks. Unfortunately it does look like when I replaced the freeze plug on the passenger side under the motor mount, I didn't get it inserted straight and fully. It is out at the bottom and I see signs of wetness. Next project.

I feel your pain. Had something similar to that happen in a 1979 K2500 and it took forever trying to find another pump with everything lined up like my old one was.

So only if the reservoir is messed up will I replace the whole unit.

That sucks. Weeping freeze plugs are the worst.

Re: Rebuild or Replace Power Steering Pump

I would rebuild the pump. Unless something drastic is wrong, a cheap seals kit and an afternoon will fix it.

Re: Rebuild or Replace Power Steering Pump

I'm having a similar issue. Very leaking, but the power steering is working fine. I'm guessing it is either the pump, reservoir, or seal between.

Did you have any problem finding a seal? And if you replaced the metal higher pressure hose, did you have any problem finding on that fit? For me, I can't seem to find a hose that looks anything like the original, and they don't even come close to fitting.

Thanks, I'll look. My hose I have is shaped very differently than any I'm seeing at the parts stores for my model.

Re: Rebuild or Replace Power Steering Pump

I took my pump apart to put new seals in it. While it sat on the bench for a few months, I had some stuff come up. I lost one of the pins that go inside the pump. Can I buy just those? Or am I screwed? Thanks
