Re: Want to buy grandpas c10. Need help!
Grandpas advice would be who wants that old thing the same as my fathers. I'm a little different and family means something to me. Being afraid to haggle face to face I am not! Would prefer it! Like I said he is a ways away and really has no realistic knowledge of what the truck is worth. The knowledge about classic vehicles he gets comes from car showers where it costs 60k to build something. I just don't know without sending him some pricing and condition info if right now face to face he would budge off of any rediculouse number (see earlier postes). I have two trucks to move onto if this doesn't work out. The only reason for this is the attachment to the truck but I will walk away if it is rediculous. I hunk I may go my original route and send some info but ask to see it better and throw out an offer after that. The thing I want to make sure I do is have my poop in a group and accurate info to send and tell him. It's going to be hard to convince otherwise. Thanks

Re: Want to buy grandpas c10. Need help!
I guess I just don't understand all of the prep work and fact finding. In my estimation, when I present someone with "facts" that are contrary to what they believe the "facts" are, they usually get their feelings hurt and go on the defensive, which never helps and usually ends negotiations. At this stage of the game and at my age, my play would be to make an offer and either bump it up a bit if I were so inclined or just say take it or leave it.

Re: Want to buy grandpas c10. Need help!
You said something about cash and partial trade earlier... forget all that.
Do you actually have the cash on hand to make your best, highest offer? Go see him in person. Look the truck over. Make an offer. I'm sure he'll counter. Counter again, and if he counters again, go with your max offer and leave if he doesn't take it. You tried your best and you've left him something to think about. It's obviously not going anywhere, I can't think of anyone that would pay close to his 8K price.

Re: Want to buy grandpas c10. Need help!
I wouldn't send a letter. If this truck is this important to you its consuming your life for the past two weeks then make some time to talk to the guy face to face.
If you write a letter you have no idea what mindset he is going to be in when he reads it. he could have just wrecked his car and need the $$$, or he could have just walked in on his wife cheating on him and give a $hit about anyone or anything. Written text always leaves room for interpretation if you are there face to face, you can explain things to him. you might get halfway thru telling him all the things in your letter and he might say "I don't care I want $8k" edit to add- forgot anything about trading crap. like they say- money talks BS walks. |

Re: Want to buy grandpas c10. Need help!
Good Luck to you and let us know how it turns out.
Me personally... I would go see him and the truck, buy him a coffee or a beer and discuss it... I feel face to face, although it may be difficult due to distance, will bring better results. The truck is worth exactly what you are willing to pay. Whatever you do will be the right thing to do, just don't ever bother to look back! |

For 8 grand it better smoke the tires and get me home. I too am calling B.S. on that. If that guy is still looking for a truck give him my number.

Don't send letter, offer trades blah blah blah, cash talks, go see the truck and him, have cash in hand, and make your offer/counter offer up to the most you want to go, either you walk out with the truck or you walk out knowing the guy is out to lunch with what he wants, either way you gave an honest effort and didn't piss away your time or his, cash in hand, make an offer, piss on all the fluff.

What's the maximum you are willing to pay for it? Make him that offer. If he takes it, win-win. If he doesn't, move on. He has your number if he ever changes his mind. Just my 2 cents.
