It's not gonna be a race truck by any means. What's a good swap for the 465? It'll probably get driven once a week to work and on weekends for work and fun. Been going through the paperwork that came with it. It's so crazy to see these "options" and prices for them.

Well, nothing in particular. It's old and worn. Still runs and I'll run it until I get the 6.0 set up and ready to drop in, but if I want over 500hp, to maintain dependability and to get more than 7 mpg, an ls motor is my best option

How many of those options does t still have? Looks like it got a repaint at some point or another. That looks too dark to be medium olive. Are the front hooks still there? It's got some decent options.

The green does seem quite a darker than factory. It still has most of those options I believe. I know it's got the tow hooks because they're huge and they stick out a lot

Do your self a favor and hold on to those hooks. They are getting hard to find and to replace.... I've seen them go on here for $600+ a set a few different times in the last year or so. They are one of my favorite options along with cab lights. That's a pretty nice truck.

Thanks. Im super excited about having it. That's crazy money for those hooks! I guess if somebody's gotta have them....And yeah, I love the cab lights. That's what originally made me think it was a 3/4 ton truck.

Me too. I always thought they were the same till I came here and people said they were different. Then came SS Tim who is an expert at digging into data on the computer and set me back to straight on it.

None. These trucks are great the way they are and that's why they have been so popular since day-1. I think you are the only one who thought it was a 1/2t. BTW, there was no such thing as a heavy half ton. There were heavy duty options for all series trucks, but that didn't make them a different model. All the heavy Half stuff started in the very late-70s. Nice truck to get what it has right and enjoy driving. It's not a Model T

Yeah, occasionally.I know a lot of the guys up there. None of my current projects are "car show" ready at this point. I might stop by there this week. Gotta find some 15" tires so I can get this truck to my house and get it to where I can drive it.

I do not know of another factory 4x4 trans that will take the torque that you are talking about making. I am very envious of that shop also. |

I think you've got a nice old k10 there - I wouldn't swap a thing out (motor, trans, anything) unless it's broken and can't be rebuilt. If you MUST replace the motor, the GM Goodwrench 260 hp (or 290, depends who you ask which is better) goes on sale at Jeg's fairly often and is a great substitute. You can even paint it up to look stock, has the 72-ish valve covers still. Keeps it very stock and it's a brand new motor. Trans - rebuild it or get it rebuilt if it really needs it, if you want a 4-speed, that is. If you're hankerin for a highway truck, then an o/d unit (Gear Vendors $$) or maybe an NV is in your future. If you want an automatic, 700R4/2004R rebuilt to truck duty are available. Anyway, money is an issue for everyone - what I think I'm trying to say is if you spend more on a motor and trans than you need, you'll run out of money for the forthcoming repaint, interior, etc. It's all about priorities. And that current 350, or a similar replacement will be more than sufficient and more well-mannered than just about any other thing you can throw in there. And they are easy to work on. Anyway, now, what I REALLY wanted to get to - the paint - your truck was originally white roof/med olive solid body. A great combo. I'd redo that in a heartbeat. Still looks cool today. The CustomCamper option only gives you a nameplate with some required gear which could all be had without checking the Custom Camper Z81 option on the order form. "Camper Special" is a square body thing. Custom Camper could be ordered on 10/20/30 series trucks, but not common on the 1/2 ton ones at all. There are a few out there. But Custom Camper is a different animal than Heavy Half as Tim mentioned - a late 70s intro.

Rat fart! Well, now what batman!? If you like that color, you're good. If you're on the fence, I'd redo it in stock colors. However, if you're not a SPID-hawker like most of us, this is THE opportunity to make it whatever color you want, inside and out. Real nice find - looking forward to your progress. Glad you were able to keep it in the family.

I love the factory color. The current paint is an ugly green. It looks better being worn than it did when it was first painted. I like her though. Even after some work and a repaint, she'll still be Ol Green.

Finally got her home today. My white truck pulling ol green has 3x the mileage (314,000 miles)of what it's hauling. Here's a pic of my grandfather's truck (the red one pictured in my shop). Picture taken shortly after she set me on fire a couple years ago. The picture of the grill is in my shop, out of the truck afterwards.
