72 K5 496 Transmission?
I have a 72 K5 that was originally a sb 350, but that wasn't quite enough fun for me. So I bought a stock 454 and swapped it but kept the 350t (just a little beefed up) And now the 454 isn't enough for me. So I tore it out and bored it out and built myself a mild 496 stroker. But now I need to put it back in, and I know the 350t is not a good idea for a transmission... What do ya'll think would be a good option instead?

Staying with automatic? A 700R4 or 4L60 won't stand up to the torque of a 496 long term (or possibly short term). You're looking at either a 400 or a 4L80.

Re: 72 K5 496 Transmission?
NV4500 is a decent option in a 5 spd. They put them behind everything including diesels. It is a pretty common swap. I did it in my build. It wasn't that difficult.

Re: 72 K5 496 Transmission?
If money matters to you as much as me, the only answer is an SM465 and the NP205 IMO. With the torque of the 496 you can gear the axles to cruise whatever RPM you prefer and the granny gear gives you good off-road chops still. Any truck through the early 80's with the SM465/NP205 would be a good donor. Shouldn't be more than $500 worth of transmission parts. Driveshaft mods will most likely be needed as well as clutch linkage fabrication because of the non-OEM placement of a big block in the 4x4 trucks.

http://www.advanceadapters.com/produ...kit-replth350/ Or go for a 4L80e. But you will need more spendy adapters from AA to keep your stock TC. Or you can find a NP205 for a 4L80e. http://www.advanceadapters.com/produ...h350-or-sm465/ John |

Or you can get a round pattern NP 205 out of a '85-91 one ton. They are a direct bolt without an adapter. Need a short input and a little bit of machining on the NV4500 tailstock.
