Another dumber question. With my 72' K20 4speed what is the proper way to put it in 4wd?

Re: 4x4 operation
Shift shifter, engaged hubs. I believe that'll be an NP205 transfer case in which case no shifts on the fly - need to be standing still. It's possible to leave the hubs engaged when the T-case is in 2WD but not a good idea for long distances.

Re: 4x4 operation
For shifting the transfer case, yes just have the transmission in neutral. The NP205 is practically indestructible, so if you make a little noise with it a couple times don't panic.

Re: 4x4 operation
If you really want to be safe; shut the engine off too. The transfer case has sliding sleeves with no syncromesh devices. As long as nothing is turning, it should slide right into 4x4 mode.
