need help with charging.
all new wiring in a 64c20. Truck needs to be jumped in order to turn on. Alternator had it checked twice at the auto store and it passed. Have got two new batteries. New starter. New voltage regulator. Cant seem to find the problem i know that our trucks have ground issues. Anyone else have this problem? Or perhaps any advice? Thanks!

Re: need help with charging.
The headlights come on in the run position? Without the jumper cables?
You connect the jumper cables directly to the battery or the positive to the positive terminal and then the negative to the block?

Re: need help with charging.
If it cranks slow forget the alternator and regulator. They haven't got a thing to do with starting the engine.
What's the battery voltage when at rest and when cranking? The - cable should run from the battery to the block. If it clicks or does nothing, look at the low current + side from the battery to the cab and back to the engine. Without a voltmeter and taking measurements, you know nothing. New wiring doesn't mean good wiring, nor does is mean wired correctly. |

Re: need help with charging.
With the engine running, you should have 13.8-14.2 volts at the post on the alternator as well as at the battery.

Re: need help with charging.
What does it do when you try starting it without a jump? Does it do nothing? Click at the starter? Turn over slowly? Turn over normally but not start?

Re: need help with charging.
Have not checked the volts on alternator nor battery.
When trying to start without jumping it does nothing. My windshield wipers barely come on. Then completely die after like 3 seconds. It doesn't even click or turn over. |

Re: need help with charging.
If you've tried this with two fresh batteries and neither are delivering full voltage to the electrical system, I'd say start troubleshooting be checking the battery cables and terminals on both ends of each cable.

Re: need help with charging.
check your grounds . I had the same problem at some point it was a bad ground wire from battery to block.

Re: need help with charging.
I have mine connected to the alternator bracket and also one from the block to the frame any open threads on the block I think should work just clean them up and use sandpaper to get down to clean/bare metal to achieve a good ground

Re: need help with charging.
When I got my truck the only way it would start was with a screwdriver at the starter. PO had changed the wiring to the switch and once I put that back to original it was good.

Re: need help with charging.
Going out on a limb... is there a wire off the starter with a fuseable link? Seems to be the number one pain in butt. If the voltage drop is around 10v that's most likely it.

Re: need help with charging.
Touch the horn relay to see if it's hot. Those are notorious for going bad and draining the battery.
