Casting block question
Hey guys, hope everybody's builds and projects are going good. I may have asked this before but the original engine that came with my truck has a cast number of 3956618. I heard that this block was only used for a few months and for just the 1969 series. I was also told it shared the 350, 327 and 302 internals depending on what vehicle it was going in including the famed camaro z28. The engine was pulled out and a new drop in was installed by the previous owner who has passed away. When I bought the truck, he said that was the origainl engine but had been rebuilt somewhere years ago from the original owner. Unfortunately I can't see the vin cause the deck has been blocked. I did find that this engine was made in 69 cause of the codes. I have a few questions though: is there any other location of a vin number? And is this a rare block cause of the casting number? A friend who has raced cars said that it was a rare block and it was a desirable one along with the high nickel content. Just figured I would ask. The engine right now is sitting in my shop. It's complete and I plan to open it up in the fall. My desire is to put it back in the truck after a rebuild if it needs it. The previous owner removed it because he said it smoked a little bit had no loss of power. So it may be something simple like valve guides, or seals... Who knows. Anyway thanks for all input.
Kris

Re: Casting block question
as far as I know you need the deck # to get you close......
I'm sure others with more knowledge will chime in

Re: Casting block question
If it has the original intake post the casting #, also pull the valve covers and post the head casting #s then we can get pretty close.

Re: Casting block question
All those come up as 1969 parts as far as I can tell by research. Now the head with the H puts in later in August.

Re: Casting block question
Block is a 350 as you know but the heads are 307. The intake decodes as a 69 350 that came on a car not a truck. Are you sure that is the original engine that came in your truck?
What part of Florida are you in?

Re: Casting block question
The previous owner who swapped it out said that it was. It was rebuilt and painted blue some years back. But if u scrape off the blue there's orange undernieth. Sad to say he passed away last Dec. I spoke with him just prior and he was very certain that it was the original engine. i live in Ocala btw, my plan was to rebuild the oringal engine and put it back in. So quick question? How can they be 307 heads? Were they possibly swapped when the engine was rebuilt?

Re: Casting block question
Just called my GM buddy and he said that he was pretty sure the heads are GM 350. He couldn't see why somebody would swap them out to a 307, even though they bolt up. The part number shows 350 on the GM site I looked at as well. Wow the mystery gets deeper!
