I would like to know about your Gas Filler Grommets

I am considering reproducing the 60-66 gas filler grommets so I would like to know what your experiences are with the reproductions on the market today. I would like to know how long they last before they start degrading, fading, cracking or otherwise turning to crap. Our previous experiences with the 67-70 and 71-72s had been all of the reproductions sucked, with some lasting less than a month. We refused to sell them because of that. So Classic Heartbeat contacted a manufacturer, tooled up and started reproducing those two grommets. Because our manufactures are using good blends of materials we are able to offer lifetime warrantees on our grommets. They are a little more expensive, but worth every penny.

So lets hear your experiences. Good or bad. We do not want to produce a piece that will just sit on the shelf because the quality of other grommets on the market are good and nobody buys mine because they are more expensive. WES

Re: I would like to know about your Gas Filler Grommets

I have one about 2yrs old and it is cracking. never been outside more that a day, so the sun isn't the problem, just air. My sm420 shifter boot went bad just sitting on the shelf while building my tk. Bought another gas filler and it's just sitting. will ck it for cracks.

I am thinking that this is going to be the norm. It is my belief that the grommets out there are all made by the same 2 companies and neither are good. But I would like to hear more. If I decide to start making the 60-66 we will offer a lifetime warrantee with ours. WES

Re: I would like to know about your Gas Filler Grommets

I have gone through 3 of them from different vendors, they may be all the same as they only last 6 months,I first though it was gas fumes from vented cap making it crack; but the orginals lasted 40-50 years! so I dont think thats it. Its a pain in the but to change them also,I would gladly pay more for one I wouldn't have to change again.

One year old. It looks worse now. My original one that I cut out was much better.

Since your have a manufacturer, I'd request a inner fender grommet that actually fits the dimensions of the OE.

PLEEEASE reproduce a quality piece. Had 2 on in less than a year, both looked crappy in 3 months. I was just resigned to the fact that it would look horrible.

Looks like if they were made from the black poly that shackle bushings are made from they would last forever.

Re: I would like to know about your Gas Filler Grommets

I just removed a NOS one from my truck in the midst of getting it ready for the paint shop. I cut it out with a utility knife. I didn't realize that the repro's were that nasty until a read this thread. Now I'm kicking myself in the you know where. I would be the first on the list to buy one. From the feedback on this thread, it looks like the need is great.
