Wiper washer question

What would make a "pop" when I press the switch for my windshield washer?
I just cleaned out all the possible dirt, and reasealed everything, but I'm still getting the"pop" and no suction at the bottle. The wipers themselves work fine.
Any ideas?

The "pop" is the washer solenoid kicking in. You should then hear it pumping if the wipers are moving back and forth. There is a rubber diaphragm inside the pump that goes bad. You can get rebuild kits for them, but some members haven't had much luck making them work and just use an external pump....

Hmm. I have an extra pump and motor setup, but I'm debating whether I want to go through the effort of changing it out only to have it possibly have a bad pump too.
I think Andy was sayin he has a remote pump from an S-10? I'm just wondering if it could be hooked up to the stock switch?

My S-10 pump is wired through the stock switch.

Don't give up on the stock pump just yet. I've managed to re-build one in the past, it is relatively simple in concept. It works like a mechanical fuel pump in miniature. You can buy re-build kits for the pump. It's in an awkward place under the dash, but it is do-able. If you give it a good try, and no luck, then the remote pump is a good alternative.

Where does one get said rebuild kit? As I said before, I have an extra unit on the bench, and I can just rebuild it and install. Easier than trying to rebuild it in place. I do want to keep the factory setup, but if I can't get it working, I'll go with the remote route.

I did mine with a small GM washer jug. The dash switch is a hot all the time and when you push the switch it grounds the pump.

I recently put a replacement pump in mine and it did not work. Then I primed the pump by pouring fluid down the line toward the pump. Once it had fluid in the pump, it works like a champ. Just remember to prime it.

KY-GMC, that's an awesome tip! That would make perfect sense as to why the pump won't work. How did you "prime the pump"? Fill up the line? Force fluid into it? One thing I am going to do is lube the seal on the inside of the pump to make sure there is no leaks around it.

custom10nut, can't remember exactly, but I think that I used a small funnel from the wife's cooking stash!

I removed the line from the tank and held it up in the air while pouring the fluid in, trying to get the fluid to the pump. You may have to un-route the hose through the fender and cable guide so that the fluid will flow to the pump while you hold it up. It doesn't take a whole lot of fluid to get it primed, you just need to get enough in there to prime it, then it will have enough suction to pull it from the tank.

I hae to confess that I filled my mouth with water, and blew it through the line, the one that comes out of the reservoir. Yukky, but it worked. Good excuse to drink a beer afterwards, to sanitize your mouth.

Victory is mine! Today I was diddling around the truck and since I had my son to help, I used a squirt bottle to prime the washer pump. It works like a champ, spraying all the way over the cab. Needless to say, I'm pleased. Now if I could get my tach to read right, this year would be complete
