Bare Block 454 sitting till warmer weather Help
I just tore down and had my cast 454 block and heads hot tanked so they are all clean and pretty. I need to paint them, but it is too cold here (28 - 40F) and I need to have them sit for a little bit (month?). I had the cylinders bored out so I definitely don't want rust to start there. What should I put in there and on the block itself to deter rust until I can get it assembled and painted? I know there are a lot of opinions out there, but hoping on some personal experience.
Thanks! |

I've had good luck with the Stabil in a spray can. Walmart has it. It hangs on and before I painted mine I just used Walmart brake cleaner to spray it off, and blow it off with air. Their brake cleaner seems to evaporate good, and then I washed it with laquer thinner before I painted.

You can spray the inside & outside of the block with WD-40 and wipe down the cylinder walls, lifter bores, deck and main journals with WD-40, oil or transmission fluid to make sure they do not surface rust. If you are storing in a non temp controlled area you may want to touch up periodically. Condensation will wash off most anything you apply to it. When you get ready to assemble the motor the interior of the motor & oil galleys should be scrubbed with hot soapy water and pressure rinsed. Then blow dry completely and coat machined surfaces with assembly oil. Exterior of the blocked can be prepped for paint with spray brake clean or lacquer thinner after washing the block and just prior to painting
