1/2 ton rear axle 5 lug & 6 lug interghange
I have a 1987 1/2 2wd 5 lug truck with 2.73 gear rearend and a friend just gave me a 1/2 4wd 6 lug rearend with 3.73 gears and a gov lock. My questions is do the parts interchange between the two rearends? Can I swap axles or can I swap carrier with ring n pinion? I havent had time to measure so I'm not even sure if they are the same width. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm not positive about the squares..... but I know a 88-98 six lug is wider than a 5 lug. Attempted installing a 4 x 4 diff in a 2WD..... no go.

Been about 10 years since I did it,but pretty sure all I did was swapped axles from 5 to 6 lug. I tried it with a 5 lug heavy half axle & the shafts were larger, ended up just using a regular 5 lug axle. Track width was same too.

I did it. My 6 lug axles slid right into the 5 lug diff. 1 Shock mount needed to be moved.
