6L90e

Are any of y'all running a 6L90e in your Gen III swap?

I am considering (if at all possible) putting a 6L90e behind my 6.0 Swap in my square body. but i havent been able to locate anything specific about running this combo using the gen III harness and ecm.

All the 6 speed autos have an internal control module (TCM) that communicates with the engine control module (ECM) over the high speed bus. The Gen III setups all used a PCM (powertrain control module) instead of separate modules and they do not have/support a high speed bus.

I'm not sure if such a critter exists, but if there are any aftermarket standalone 6 speed controllers, that's probably about the only way to run a 6 speed auto behid a Gen III engine.

There are 1 or 2 aftermarket controllers for the 6l trans. Doesn't appear all that easy and they're pricey.

Another option is swapping to a gen4 58x ecu capable of running the 6l trans. This would require removing the 24x reluctor wheel on the crank (gotta remove the crank) and going 58x which is best performed by a machine shop for alignment purposes. Then you'd need the correct rear cam sensor for 58x and the 58x cam timing set with sensor. Oh and possibly a new cam to match the timing set as the number of bolts for the timing gear did change through the years and I have no idea how interchangeable they are.

Neither option really seems worth it in my opinion, you'd be better of just getting a Gen4 engine and ecu to go along with the trans. I also don't feel the trans is worth it, this coming from a guy who drive a 4.8, 6l80e work van and hates the trans. Very hard to get it to give you the gear you want and in auto, not predictable at all. Downshifts take forever and if it has to downshift more than one year it takes even longer. Plus I don't feel it makes the van any quicker. Mileage around town is slightly improved since the trans is constantly shifting compared to a 4spd auto but on the highway you're not going to notice any difference.

Thanks for the info. i had been literally 3 seconds away from pulling the trigger on buying one of these transmissions and something that the seller said caught me off guard and made me think twice. glad i did!
