1986 GMC Sierra 3500 2wd
I'm looking at this 1986 GMC Sierra 3500 2wd Dually(at least that what the ad says), from what I have researched this may not be a factory 1 ton dually:
In the description they state that the engine is a v6 292: 1. From my research GM never made a 292 v6, but they did make a 4.3L 262 v6. 2. In 1986 the 262 v6 wasn't available on a one ton truck but the 292 L6 was an option. If in fact this is a 4.3L v6 it seems that this would be a weak engine for a one ton dually. What would be a good easy replacement engine? I'm guessing that this truck has a chassis from a 3/4 ton truck and a body from a one ton. I have not looked at this truck in person yet and don't have access to the VIN to decode it. What is the diffrence between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton (besides the suspension)? Most likely a mis print, L6, not V6 292.

Almost certainly an inline 292, trans will be 3+ creeper gear, light GVW. One tone frames are heavier and the suspension and wheels are different. Tires and brakes are significantly more expensive. Cab front metal and interior parts all interchange.

The two resons that I am suspicious that the chassis is a 3/4 ton is one that the front wheels are not dually rims (has normal rims). Second is I'm thinking that the motor is a v6 which was not available on the one ton.

Check the vin. If it IS original that should give you a clue or two.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra 3500 2wd
I'm pretty sure V6 and one ton was not an option. 292 was.
I 'suppose' someone could have swapped front suspension. More likely someone swapped the rear 'thinking' it gave them more load capacity. It sounds like its been pieced together. I would be shy about using it for anything other than parts.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra 3500 2wd
I spoke with the owner and he said that it is an inline 6(typo in the add). So once I take a look at it I'll decode the vin and go from there.
