New to board--Neutral-Safety/BU light question
Hey guys, I've really been helped out by reading this board for a while.
I'm in Northport, AL, and I have a 68 C-10 swb, 350 4-bolt, TH400. When I bought the truck, the backup lights weren't hooked up. I bought a NS/BU switch at Advance, and I found what I think is the place to install it on the column (at the base near the firewall). However, it's not obvious to me how to mount this thing, get it matched up with the shifter, and get it wired. Anyone have any experience in this area? Thanks in advance. |

On the top side of the steering column under the dash close to where it goes through the firewall there is a slot that the switch mounts in. Put the switch (black tab on the inside of the half moon) in the center put shifter in neutral put switch into slot (metal tabs or ears facing toward steering wheel). You might have to move it from side to side a little until the switch seats all the way. there should be two screw holes in the column under the metal ears screw it on but don't tighten all the way, you may need the adjust the switch position a little so the it cuts off when the shift lever is in gear and makes contact when in park or neutral.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. It looks like my part doesn't match up just right, and I'll be waiting till wed or thurs for shipment of another. I'll let you know how it works out. When I get myself a digital camera (hopefully soon) I'll post some pics of the truck.
Thanks again, fellas. |

Got the part in, and everything fell into place. Works like a charm. Thanks, Larry--I'd never have known to order a new part without your advice.

Refering to the picture in this post -
Are two of the wire terminals on the right for the Neutral safety switch, and the other two on the left are for the back up light switch? I was wiring my 72 today with the Painless harness and this step was not very clear.

On the part I received from Chevy Duty, one pair had prongs that were parallel to one another, and the other had prongs that were perpendicular to one another. The ones that were for the backup lights were the perpendicular ones.
If you want to be sure about your particular part, just slide the tab to the center position, check to see which set of prongs has a complete circuit, and that's your neutral safety prongs---one click to the left should complete the circuit for the other pair, since that is 'reverse' in the shifting order. If you don't know how to test the circuit, just set your multimeter to 'Ohms,' (the one with the speaker symbol is easiest, since the tester will buzz if the circuit is completed), and put the red lead to one of the prongs, and the black lead to the other prong within the same pair. If the tester buzzes, the circuit is complete. Does that make sense? |
